Radio Dupree sounding even better!

Radio Dupree makes the "big switch" tomorrow (Saturday April 5) at 6 p.m. Central European Time. While we've been happy enough with the music on the playlist, we've been less than happy with the sound quality of the station. We started out using a higher bitrate, but downgraded after a couple of months to give people connecting using a modem a chance to listen in. The number of listeners increased and we've stuck to the 32 kbps stream. That is, until tomorrow evening.

In one hopefully quick and trouble-free switch we're going to 64 kbps mp3PRO.
Listen in, tell us what you think and just to help you keep track of the switch; here's a countdown timer:

(If you can't see the timer your javascript is most probably disabled)

Radio Dupree celebrating five years in April

Radio Dupree is celebrating five years on the web this month. So until our website is updated, here is some information on what's going on:

We are going to sound better. Not as in changing the music we play, but rather as in changing our bitrate.
That will take place this coming weekend. Listen in and let us know what you think.

The 5 year anniversary makes us extra generous: We are giving away a brand new copy of our Album of the Month. So what album is that? Look in here tomorrow (Tuesday April 1) to find out more about the album and how you can win it.

During April we'll also have a couple of extra shows. It's been quite some time since we last did an hour or so focusing on a single artist, music style or whatever. This month is the perfect month to celebrate some of "our artists", i.e. artists we've been playing since we first started our little station here on the Internet. More on these shows this weekend.

As always you're welcome to write us at radiodupree@yahoo.se

NASA sends The Beatles across the universe

Yep. 7 pm Eastern Standard Time Monday February 4 NASA will beam The Beatles song Across The Universe out in to space.

Here's what NASA writes:
The transmission over NASA's Deep Space Network will commemorate the 40th anniversary of the day The Beatles recorded the song, as well as the 50th anniversary of NASA's founding and the group's beginnings. Two other anniversaries also are being honored: The launch 50 years ago this week of Explorer 1, the first U.S. satellite, and the founding 45 years ago of the Deep Space Network, an international network of antennas that supports missions to explore the universe.

The transmission is being aimed at the North Star, Polaris, which is located 431 light years away from Earth. The song will travel across the universe at a speed of 186,000 miles per second.

Read more here.

We can't help but share the comment left by Uncle Sams nephew on the NASA site:

"Is this a serious attempt at communication or just some half-baked feelgood thing solely for a few people here to feel warm & fuzzy?

Stop wasting U.S. taxpayer money. Could've at least sent it in a format for easy decoding (like AM)... not like the transmission will orbit around Polaris while some distant civilization figures out what an MP3 digital stream is and how to decode it.The MP3 specs should be transmitted as well. And if you can only send a digital transmission, how about an uncompressed raw format for decoding.

Also hope you got the RIAA's permission for this- music sharing is a no-no.

This isn't rocket science."

In the meantime Radio Dupree has already launched the monthly update of our homepage. It happened this evening. Our Album of the Month won't need no shoes and apparently fans of sometimes-Steely Dan drummer Keith Carlock can catch him playing in Denmark this month! Read more on the Radio Dupree homepage.

Finally updated

It took a bit longer than expected and planned, but we finally got the first update of the year for the Radio Dupree homepage. This being our fifth anniversary year, we'll get some extra stuff going there eventually, but this time around it's just a lite update to get the year going.

And here's some Weekend Music:

Carolyn Leonhart & Wayne Escoffery perform Earth Calling from their new CD If Dreams Come True.

2008 ... it's official!

Still a couple of days to go, but the official Steely Dan site is already on 2008. Apparently.
And nothing wrong with that! 2008 is a year to look forward to. At least if we're supposed to believe Fagen in that newly published interview. Walter Becker will release his second solo album, Steely Dan and/or Donald Fagen solo will tour...

And - most importantly - Radio Dupree will celebrate five years on the air!
Expect us to make good use of this special year in Radio Dupree's short but pleasant existence. We'll have fun on the station, web page and blog. Consider yourself informed, warned and updated.
