Paul's Surprise!

Paul Simon's Surprise cover

Just to get something here without any relation to Steely Dan:

We're (finally) entering spring here in the north of Sweden. Cue the arrival of a four track sampler featuring tracks from Paul Simon's upcoming album Surprise.
Brian Eno has produced and after just a few spins I can say it sounds fine! Familiar but not a safe or tired repeat.

Make up your own mind: We've added Paul to the playlist. But that's not all. There are quite a few new names - well-known or not - getting their first spins on Radio Dupree. Right now!

Steely Dan & Michael McDonald summer tour

tour dates
Looks like the tour is on! Both michaelmcdonald.com and steelydan.com have updated to show that it will happen. All we're waiting for now is confirmed dates.

Let's see how they differ from the list of dates posted on Michael McDonald's homepage April 12.
(See the Radio Dupree homepage for a copy of the old & incorrect dates posted).

Situated in Europe and Sweden Radio Dupree would of course prefer a few European dates, but at the same time we have a gut feeling it won't happen.

Happy Birthday, Radio Dupree!

Radio Dupree is three years old today!
Hooray for us!

And I could write that due to extensive partying we plain forgot the promised update of our site, but the truth of the matter is really in the technology. And time and space. Not only between my ears.

Grabbed the portable computer and got some stuff to update the site with on my USB memory. Boarded a bus for Easter weekend fun with a few minutes planned for Radio Dupree-updating. I knew I had the software on the machine. But of course I didn't.

Thanks to helpful people like my sister's kids I almost got it all working, almost except for the final ftp. So the page is ready but I can't get it out and up until I'm home and can use my stationary PC back home. That will happen late Sunday evening.

Apart from this miss everything's been fine. And we both expect Radio Dupree to play for a fourth year!

Steely Dan summer tour ... rumours and facts

Walter Becker and Donald Fagen of Steely Dan on stage
Donald Fagen and Walter Becker. Touring this summer with Michael McDonald?

As Donald Fagen's solo tour through March came to an end it took but a week or so before Steely Dan fans started to speculate on where and when the rumoured Steely Dan/Michael McDonald tour will take place.

Over on the Dandom Blue Book links were posted:

http://event.nexttix.com/

The above stating:

Event: Steely Dan

Venue: Tweeter Center - Boston, MA

Event Date: August 27, 2006

Event Time: 7:30 PM

And another one:

http://classic.motown.com/ontour_d.aspx?aid=69

listing Michael McDonald's upcoming dates that may/may not be in conjunction with Steely Dan.

Those dates run between June 3 and September 14.

Also; Ticketmaster has one Steely Dan date listed:

Fri, 09/01/06 at the Blossom Music Center Cuyahoga Falls, OH

An earlier rumour said that news about Steely Dan's summer activities will be presented April 15. That's just a couple of days away, so let's see what happens!

Saturday: Lemmy, Horace and Keith

Lemmy holding a guitar on the back of the CD
Lemmy pictured on the back of the new CD

What have I been listening to this Saturday? Oddly enough ... or maybe not; Lemmy! I've always had a weak spot for that rock n roller, and when I stumbled upon a new collection named Damage Case I had to give it a spin. Especially since Lemmy himself took part in picking the tracks, and it ended up featuring odd numbers from the mid 60's up to 2005. I've never heard the Rockin' Vickers or Sam Gopal before, but thanks to this collection I have.

Also had to get the Horace Silver Quintet's Song For My Father out for a listen after reading up on the latest discussions among the fans of Steely Dan.
One of the subjects has been borrowing/stealing/being inspired by melodies, and the title track from that classic Horace Silver album has been mentioned. It's a song that "inspired" Steely Dan's hit Rikki Don't Lose That Number. Or at least a few seconds of it.

It occurred to me that we haven't played Song For My Father on Radio Dupree, so that is added together with a couple more tracks from the album.

(The other "borrowed" song; Long As You Know You're Living Yours from Keith Jarret's album Belonging has been heard on Radio Dupree and is part of the playlist now and then. By the way: Keith took Steely Dan to court ... and won. Keith Jarret is now listed as co-composer of Gaucho.)
