Elton John is 65! (Pnau & The Diving Board coming up)

And he celebrated his Birthday a couple of days ago; Sunday.

Just the right time to wish him a Happy Birthday and write about a couple of new things happening this year as fas as Elton goes:

 1) Back in 2008 Elton's management signed the Australian dance music duo Pnau (Nick Littlemore and Peter Mayes).
They have been working on his original multitrack recordings with the goal to make eight remix tracks that will eventually make an album's worth of new music. The first track is out and called Say Good Morning To The Night. It is based on Elton's Mona Lisa And The Mad Hatters plus a couple of other songs. Hear it a bit further down this post after we've written about...

2) Elton's brand new album set for an autumn release and his first solo album since The Captain & The Kid in 2006. After that one he released The Union in 2010 with Leon Russell. Just like The Union his new one is produced by T Bone Burnett. And it is thanks to T Bone that they ended up recording the album, titled The Diving Board, with just piano, bass and drums. Read more about it in this Rolling Stone article and - just like us - look forward to hearing the results later this year.

Guitars from old buildings. Walter Becker's buying one

Here's a link to a story/video about Rich Kelly in New York. He's building guitars made from tree from old houses. Recycling houses into guitars, if you will. Great story with the added tidbit that Steely Dan's Walter Becker is getting one made.

Steely Dan 8-track anyone?

The Steely Dan collector has an easier job than many other music collectors when it comes to collectiong all official releases. There are just a handful of albums and very few non-album tracks such as b-sides on singles and soundtrack contributions to track down.

The completist might continue to hunt down all versions of a release and this is where these three 8-track Steely Dan albums might be interesting.
They're still around and are still being sold, but if you live outside the Unites States you may not even have heard of this tape technology. Finding an 8-track player might be a bit of a problem, but as a gift to the Steely Dan completist these three albums (Pretzel Logic, The Royal Scam and Aja) for $16 might be just the thing. Here's a link to the page. Ships only to the US and ends March 31.

The Darcys' Josie video and remix

We wrote about it back in January and with the arrival of a video for one of the songs it is once again time to mention Canadian prog-rock band The Darcys' take on Steely Dan's album Aja.

This is what the video to Josie looks like:

Here's a link to download a remix called Josie (Vol.2) that is much slower and ... different.

Finally; you can download the whole album for free on the band's homepage http://www.thedarcys.ca

Chart compiled by listeners voting
on the songs they hear on Radio Dupree

Just like last month we have two women in the Top 20. Linda Ronstadt at 9 and Marianne Faithful at 17. Plus Carolyn Leonhart at 31.
Yes, we've had such a number of listeners reactions this month that we've expanded the chart to a Top 40. We're also enjoying a peak in listening this past month. Thanks all for tuning in!

Looking at the very top we find The Beatles followed by a nice mix of pop, prog and whathaveyou in the form of Creedence, Allan Holdsworth, Christian Vander (on a solo outing away from Magma), Pink Floyd, The Crimson Jazz Trio and Focus. Notice also that Genesis and Peter Gabriel are on a bit of a roll this month with six songs among the 40.

Until next month; Keep listening and keep voting!

Album of the Month: Headquarters by The Monkees

It'sa new month and a new Album of the Month here on Radio Dupree. For March 2012 we've picked Headquarters, the third album from The Monkees. It is also the first one where they had a chance to write and play on the record.

The first two albums were written and recorded with the members of The Monkees just adding the vocals.

We'll go with the 2007 Deluxe version featuring a bunch of bonus tracks as well as both stereo and mono mixes of the original album from 1967.
