Jimi Hendrix live in Maui – new documentary and soundtrack

There is a new documentary out on Jimi Hendrix. And along with that a soundtrack album on 2 CD/3 LP. The title of the documentary is Music, Money, Madness. It was filmed in Maui, Hawaii in July 1970.

"The film chronicles the Jimi Hendrix Experience’s storied visit to Maui, and how the band became ensnared with the ill-fated Rainbow Bridge movie and incorporates never-before-released original footage and new interviews." (jimihendrix.com)

Al Di Meola presents sequel to Friday Night in San Fransisco

Via Al Di Meola's Facebook we learn that there was a “Saturday Night in San Francisco" the night after “Friday Night In San Francisco” at the same Warfield theater from December 1980 with the trio Al Di Meola/John McLaughlin/Paco De Lucia.
The Friday's show was released on the famous album pictured above.

Now finally after restoring the tapes they will be brought out for release in June or Sept 2021 in the states on the IMPEX - SONY label  and in Europe on EAR MUSIC label . The live recording will feature compositions of John’s “Meeting of the Spirits”, Paco’s “El Panuelo” , Al’s “Splendido Sundance”, Luis Bonfa’s “Black Orpheus”, and each player’s unaccompanied individual solo spot."

New Elton John box full of rarities and unreleased music arriving November 13

Jewel Box is the title of a mammoth 8 CD or 9 LP box set of rarities and unreleased stuff from Elton John's long career. A career that has been on a slight but still upward trajectory since the release of the movie Rocketman in 2019.

And just as with most artists that have their peak a few decades back the new recordings released are usually passed upon by old fans while finding few new. At the same time yet one more Greatest Hits compilation is a sure seller. That's why you'll find artists of that time but still active today having a Best Of compilation coming every three, four years. Usually around Christmas time.

There's no surprise there's rarities and even some unreleased music in the vaults when it comes to Elton John. Back in the day he refused to have singles released with albums tracks as B-sides. A buyer of his latest hit always got one more new song on the flip side.

There's been one box set before this from Elton:

To Be Continued... released back in 1990 with a mix of hits, album tracks, unreleased old and new songs on a total of 4 CDs.

But the 1992 double-CD Rare Masters should also be mentioned. A collection of songs from his singles between 1968-1975 that had not been included on any albums. Also five unreleased songs plus the complete soundtrack to the 1971 movie Friends for the first time on CD.

Two songs from the forthcoming Jewel Box has already been released on streaming services. The above Sing Me No Sad Songs as well as Snow Queen, a duet with Kiki Dee that was the B-side to their 1976 hit Don't Go Breaking My Heart.

So what about the contents of the new box set then?

Apart from a book with texts and photos there's 148 songs in total. 80 for the first time in digital, non-physical format. 60 never before released in any format.

The first two CDs are titled Deep Cuts which means album tracks and such that weren't hits:

1. Monkey Suit -- Elton John and Leon Russell 2. Where To Now St Peter? 3. Mellow 4. The Ballad Of Danny Bailey (1909-34) 5. Chameleon 6. Gone To Shiloh -- Elton John and Leon Russell 7. Radio Dupree's long time Elton John fan Neb Stephenson says that this is interesting enough for him to get his wallet out November 13 when the box set is released. Although this also means that his vinyl and CD bootleg collection of Elton stuff will further deprecate in whatever value it currently has.

Could this cassette hold the most complete version of Steely Dan's "Second Arrangement"?

Picture of the said cassette

This week brought great news to the Steely Dan fans familiar with the story of the great lost song Second Arrangement. A post on recording engineer Roger Nichols Facebook account by his daughter shows a cassette that apparently is one of three with the Second Arrangement that left the studio on the night before the master tape were erased. And while they apparently attempted to re-record it they didn't get it right and the song never made it to Steely Dan's album Gaucho released in 1980.

For a quick recap of the story of the lost Second Arrangement click this link.

According to the post and added comments Donald Fagen had one of the cassettes and maybe it is safe to speculate that Walter Becker had the second? Anyway this copy is the one that recording Roger Nichols brought home to listen to. And here it is. A find that may or may not make it to any kind of official release.

There are a number of more or less hissy tape copies of the song in various stages of recording floating around for years. With the advent of the internet they've been shared extensively and are not that hard to find.  Even if this cassette holds the most complete recording of the song there are many obstacles to conquer for it to be available for fans and others to listen to.

First there's the job of getting whatever this 40+ old cassette contains off of it and onto a digital medium. Not impossible but not that easy either. You basically have one chance to play and record what the tape holds and then it is kaputt!
But let's say that it all goes well and that the music on the cassette really is a good sounding almost finished version of Second Arrangement. This is where the lawyers enter. Who owns the rcording? And once that's settled will whoever owns it have any interest in releasing it? Since neither Donald Fagen or Walter Becker have been that keen on releasing any kind of demos or half ready recordings, alternative mixes or "extras" that didn't make an official album we at Radio Dupree see it as a long shot we and you will ever hear what's on that cassette.

But we hope we're wrong... ;)

P.S.
Yes. We were at The Beacon Theatre in New York on September 17, 2011 when the band played it during the "Rarities Night". Only time it has been played live.

Read a book! Rolling Stone list rock memoirs

In these times and even after them, we could all do with a book or two. Or five. Reading is a great thing!

Rolling Stone recently listed the top 50 rock memoirs, and while we all know that best of-lists of any kind is likely to irritate more than inform, this is a nice list of books that you might or might not be interested in reading. Skip the chart side of it. It doesn't matter who ended up #1 and who didn't make it. See it as a few suggestions that might lead on to other books, other genres:

Zappa at VPRO Piknik included in new 4 CD set

The Mothers 1970
The new 4 CD set includes live and studio performances by Frank Zappa & The Mothers 1970.
This features recordings from the first months by the new band that Frank formed after he broke the old Mothers up in 1969. It is often referred to as the Vaudeville band or the Flo & Eddie band.

The set includes the performance that the band did at VPRO, a dutch TV station. It has been bootlegged several times and it will be nice to hear this in better sound quality.

Some fans think that this era is already well covered and that it would be more interesting to hear recordings of others lineups. Others seem to enjoy any new Zappa release and appreciate that there is stuff being released every year.

This is an excerpt from the presentation by zappa.com:
The Mothers 1970 encapsulates the band’s brief but productive span, which included two visits to the studio – resulting in the fantastic 1970 album, Chunga’s Revenge – and tours across the U.S., Canada and Europe. Divided into four parts, the collection is anchored by top notch studio recordings recorded at the famed London-based Trident Studios on June 21-22 with a then-young, unknown producer in the engineer chair by the name of Roy Thomas Baker, several years before he’d go on to have massive success working with Queen, The Cars and Alice Cooper to name a few. An unreleased early mix by Baker of the Chunga’s Revenge track, “Sharleena,” is just one of the many highlights of the studio recordings that also boasts several unearthed rough mixes of the Zappa/Simmons co-write, “Wonderfu l Wino,” including a rare version that showcases vocals and an alternate guitar solo by Zappa that has been lost to the ages as the original multi-track stems were recorded over. Of the material recorded during this two-day span, “Sharleena” was the only song ever officially released – so tracks like “Red Tubular Lighter,” “Giraffe” and an unheard version of “Envelopes” are completely brand new to fans half a century later.

There is already one track out on YouTube (and Spotify). Check it out here:

Steely Dan's Two Against Nature is 20 years old today!

Celebratory cover version by Jim "Hoops" McKay
February 29 2000 was the day that Steely Dan released the first album of new songs since Gaucho back in 1980.

I bought the new one and after work I sat down in my sofa with headphones on and listened to the whole album once, twice. three times...

It was amazing to finally be able to listen to the record that had been rumoured for a long time and  then announced for real. Twenty years after Gaucho.

I was a happy man that day. And will l give Two Against Nature a spin today on its 20 anniversary.

It ended up being a comeback as well as the band's next to last album. 2003 saw the release of Everything Must Go. And that was it. While the short time of three years between Two Against Nature and Everything Must Go had me hoping for more Steely Dan albums they never appeared.

The band concentrated on touring and Donald Fagen and Walter Becker recorded solo albums.

I was reminded of the day and date by a post in the Dandom.com Facebook group. So on I go ... listening to Gaslighting Abbie and the rest:

1."Gaslighting Abbie"
2."What a Shame About Me"
3."Two Against Nature"
4."Janie Runaway"
5."Almost Gothic"
6."Jack of Speed"
7."Cousin Dupree"
8."Negative Girl"
9."West of Hollywood"

Happy Birthday Walter!

http://walterbeckermedia.com/

Walter Becker of Steely Dan would've been 70 today. But he passed away in September 2017.

So on his birthday let us highlight the wonderful world of

walterbeckermedia.com

started in 2018 to offer "hi-fidelity rarities, demos, and unreleased tracks from Becker's archives, plus downloads, discussion boards, history, context, and pics" to fans old and new.

As of today you can listen to, download for free and discuss - also for free - 27 tracks.

Here's just a couple of them:

Nobody thought there existed any recording of the live show Walter Becker did April 7, 1995 at Slim's in San Francisco. The one and only solo show he did with songs from his album 11 Tracks of Whack. But a recording has been found and here's one song posted:

And this one has been doing the rounds for years as a very, very nth generation cassette copy among the hardcore fans. Returning in a sparkling, shiny way. The story behinf it well worth a read after you've had a listen:

Happy Birtday, Walter!

Macmillan tells Rolling Stone about some alternate setups with the model Louisa Livingstone. “Any kind of sexuality took away from the foreboding mood. But she was a terrific model. She had amazing courage and understanding of what I was trying to do.”

The first date is June 2 in Portland, Oregon with the tour ending in Bethel, New York on July 11.
