"If You Don't Leave Me I'll Find Somebody Who Will"

You can't but love a guy who came up with a song title that! And Radio Dupree has been fans of Warren Zevon since the 80's.

He passed away in 2003 and May 1 this year marks the release of the biography titled I'll Sleep When I'm Dead and written by his ex-wife Crystal Zevon.
She has a blog over at http://crystalzevon.com/ about the book.

We at Radio Dupree will continue feature Warren's music on our playlist.

"The good, the bad, and the ugly...a moralist in cynic's clothing. He nails a part of the American character rarely captured in pop music."
-- Bruce Springsteen

Paging Mr Becker!

Walter BeckerNot much happening on the official Walter Becker MySpace page except new dates on the ever evolvoing Steely Dan spring tour, but the page itself has moved and the new address is:

http://www.myspace.com/walterbecker

Just thought you might like to know.

The solo album? Your guess is as good as ours, but after a massive 2.5 months without updates of the official Walter Becker homepage all we're able to say is "it's in the works"...

Good news in Warren-land!

We were sad to hear that the planned box set of goodies and unreleased stuff from late singer/songwriter Warren Zevon stranded late last year. It had been in the works for some time.

Looks like all's not lost. This is what his son Jordan wrote on the www.warrenzevon.com bulletin board a week ago:

"When it looked like the Rhino box set was no mas, I went to Danny Goldberg and New West records to release the early demo recordings on a single disc minus the recordings from the Warner vault. The good news is the Rhino box may happen after all with later recordings and a live disc."

So all of a sudden we have the three expanded releases of Excitable Boy, The Envoy and Stand In The Fire next month joined by an album of early demos titled Warren Zevon - Preludes - Rare and Unreleased Recordings. And then further down the line the box set.

And we shouldn't forget the biography written by Crystal Zevon coming this May titled I'll Sleep When I'm Dead: The Dirty Life and Times of Warren Zevon.

Wasa Express - jazz rock veterans on stage again

Swedish jazz rock/fusion veterans Wasa Express plays together again. Radio Dupree staff member Sigurd Huckle saw them in concert on February 10. But he had to wait 27 years to see them live on stage!
Wasa Express is a four piece band led by drummer Åke Eriksson, a legend among swedish musicians (has also played with the group Egba which you may have heard on Radio Dupree). Wasa Express was probably the best Swedish jazz rock band of the late 70's. The first album was released in 1977 (self titled) and sort of legendary with its mix of hard driving instrumental rock and musicians humor. Lotsa drums! Three more albums were released before the band broke up in 1979. By then they had moved more and more into heavy rock leaving out the jazz influences. The first time they reunited was in the mid 80's. Now they have returned to the jazz rock style and they have even released a couple of new cd:s the most recent years. Radio Dupree caught them live in concert in Umeå, Sweden on February 10 and was delighted to hear many of the classic tunes like Son Of A Peach and Mr. Curry.
Vintage Holdsworth
If you're interested go visit http://www.wasaexpress.net
Never before have I seen a web site by a musical group showing such generosity. Lots of music downloadable, for free! There are even six unreleased tracks with Tony Williams and Allan Holdsworth, from a 1975 recording session in Sweden! "Tony must have liked Europafilm studios Because in 1975 he returned with an all star cast of Alan Holdsworth, Jack Bruce, Webster Lewis and Tequila on vocals."
How about that, fusion friends?
Sigurd Huckle

Donald Fagen show report

We got an email from one of the lucky people attending the shows with Ollabelle/Donald Fagen/Phoebe Snow in Bearsville this past weekend :

: : : : :

Thought I'd give some first hand feedback from the Ollabelle Fagen, Snow show in NY this weekend.

My wife and I saw the Saturday night show. Not surprisingly we found it to be spectacular. The reviews you posted gave accurate accounts of the music, so I'll give some other tidbits:

-The Bearsville Theater is small, like 400 seats + 75 standing room only folks (of which were 2). Making for an ideal environment to see this group.

-Phoebe was a surprise to me, I know she is renowned and I have heard some of her work, but she was fabulous.

-She and Donald were quite cute together on stage, he calling her Pheeb and then leaving the stage arm-in-arm.

-A cool item that only folks viewing from stage left could see was a large equipment case, partially hidden behind some other stuff that read, in partially faded, but an unmistakable font: "Steely Dan." It gave me goosebumps.

-Jon Herington was in his element, allowed to play in his usual humble unassuming manner, yet because he was the only member in the spotlight on that small stage, he seemed to flourish...indeed many beautiful solos. I felt happy that I happened to pass him in the lounge after the show and was able to say "great show."

-I felt lucky throughout the night that I had decided to by tickets (thanks to the Radio Dupree blog!) , who knows how many times this group will play together again.

-It was a cold, cold night in upstate New York, in a cozy ideal setting...but a weekend I will always remember. Thanks for all the information you post, I don't know if I would have heard about this show otherwise.

Thanks,
Ben B.

And thanks to Ben for the report. Photos from the show? Of course! Pete Fogel, longtime fans & friend of Steely Dan, used his camera and here are the results:

Weekend music: Daddy Don't Live...

Found this one on the Internet this evening:

Steve Berry from Phoenix, Arizona doing a simple, soulful, jazzy guitar-and-vocals version of Steely Dan's Daddy Don't Live In That New York City No More.

I like it!

February update

The monthly update of the Radio Dupree homepage is there for the reading. You can stay five seonds or hours dependning on your interest in what's published there.
Our Album of the Month is an old vinyl from 1978.

Visitor 10 000? Our visitor number 10 000 came and went without notice. He, she (or it?) didn't send in the screen dump needed (see previous blog posting) so we're holding on to the bag of goodies we had prepared for the winner.
Oh, well ... there's always 20 000!

: : : : :

Here's a review from Poughkepsie Journal of yesterdays show in Bearsville featuring Olabelle, Phoebe Snow and Donald Fagen. They'll do a second show tonight and it seem like the first one was a success.
And another positive review from the Times Union.
