Revisiting the Stealy Band

We wrote about the Swedish Stealy Band playing Steely Dan covers a couple of weeks ago.

And now Gina from Mizar 5 has found not only a blog reviewing the band/evening, but also Stealy Band's MySpace page. Check out the bands versions of Peg, Green Earrings, Josie and Kid Charlemagne.
And by the look of things Stealy Band will play live again May 16 in Stockholm at Kungliga Musihögskolans/Royal School of Music's New Sound Made Festival. (Page in Swedish)

And since the subject is Swedish Steely Dan cover bands, a quick plug for the local 2nd Arrangement. No dates for 2008 so far, but we're hoping...

"18 particularly ridiculous prog-rock album covers"

Since we found a couple of artists that we play here on Radio Dupree among the 18 prog-rock album covers featured in this article we better share a link to it.
Whether you agree with the selection or not it is still a fun read.

Jordan Zevon album out April 15

Close to three years after the five track EP was released the album Insides Out has finally been given a release date: April 15. On New West Records. It was originally scheduled for July 2007.
Jordan is the son of Warren Zevon and both are Radio Dupree-favorites.

Jordan's work re-releasing his fathers albums continue with an expanded version of his 1976 album titled Warren Zevon. No release date yet for that one.

Stealy Band ... with a Steely Dan connection

Did anyone catch the Swedish Steely Dan cover band Stealy Dan at the Stockholm jazz club Fasching yesterday?

According to an article in Friday's issue of Dagens Nyheter, the band was started a year ago by bass player Kristoffer Sundström and guitarist Efraim Olofsson as a project at the school they both attend; Musikhögskolan/Royal College Of Music.
As a tutor they managed to get Georg Wadenius who played with Steely Dan in the 90's as well as on Donald Fagen's 1993 album Kamakiriad.
Stealy Band at Fasching was 13 people strong, so they should've been able to give the songs the full band treatment.

Oh, and Georg Wadenius will play Fasching in just a couple of weeks time; Febryary 8. We doubt that there will be any Steely Dan covers on the setlist.

Update January 30: Thanks to Gina over on Mizar 5 we now have a link to a review of the show as well as one to the groups MySpace page. A BIG thank you to Gina.

Elvis Costello: The 2008 model will be here March

He's been around long enough and done music good enough to have enough fans to keep releasing expanded and jazzed up versions of his old albums. I'm talking about Elvis Costello, who's second album; This Year's Model, celebrates 30 years on this planet this year. And why not release an expanded version of the record?

Of course it was already done back in 2001, but where there's a will there's a way and a few new tracks to remaster and compile. So we'll have a new version of This Year's Model in March, 2008.

Elvis Costello has changed enough over the years to find himself with fans who prefer a centain version of Elvis Costello. I subscribe to the early Elvis. I liked the first two albums but gradually lost interest in his music finding the odd song here and there that I liked.
I've yet to buy any of the souped-up CD versions of his albums, but the new version of This Year's Model looks like an excuse to finally get around to ordering it as well as his debut My Aim Is True that was given the deluxe treatmet last year.

Tracks on the upcoming version of This Year's Model:

DISC ONE: 1 No Action 2 This Year's Girl 3 The Beat 4 Pump It Up 5 Little Triggers 6 You Belong To Me 7 Hand In Hand 8 (I Don't Want To Go To) Chelsea 9 Lip Service 10 Living In Paradise 11 Lipstick Vogue 12 Night Rally 13 Radio, Radio
- Bonus material: b-sides, demos, live tracks, alternates, etc: 14 Big Tears 15 Crawling To The USA 16 Tiny Steps 17 Running Out Of Angels (demo version) 18 Greenshirt (demo version) 19 Big Boys (demo version) 20 Neat Neat Neat (live) 21 Roadette Song (live) 22 This Year's Girl (alternate Eden Studios version) 23 (I Don't Want To Go To) Chelsea (alternate Basing Street Studios version)

DISC TWO (
ELVIS COSTELLO AND THE ATTRACTIONS Live At The Warner Theater, Washington, DC, February 28, 1978): 1 Pump It Up* 2 Waiting For The End Of The World* 3 No Action* 4 Less Than Zero* 5 The Beat* 6 (The Angels Wanna Wear My) Red Shoes* 7 (I Don't Want To Go To) Chelsea* 8 Hand In Hand* 9 Little Triggers* 10 Radio, Radio* 11 You Belong To Me* 12 Lipstick Vogue* 13 Watching The Detectives* 14 Mystery Dance* 15 Miracle Man* 16 Blame It On Cain* 17 Chemistry Class
(* Previously Unreleased)

Allt this typing has inspired me to add a couple of tracks to the Radio Dupree playlist. And here's a video from when This Year's Model was brand new:

Finally updated

It took a bit longer than expected and planned, but we finally got the first update of the year for the Radio Dupree homepage. This being our fifth anniversary year, we'll get some extra stuff going there eventually, but this time around it's just a lite update to get the year going.

And here's some Weekend Music:

Donald Fagen: Unprinted letter to the Times

Over on donaldfagen.com Donald Fagen has published a letter to the New York Times that the newspaper didn't print. It's "concerning Michiko Kakutani's December 7th review of Craig Unger's "The Fall of the House of Bush"".

More on the book can be read over on Craig Unger's homepage.

And since it's almost January 10:

Gary Katz producing Jay & The Americans

What's Gary Katz up to these days? is one of the recurring questions among Steely Dan fans.

According to The Herald-Tribune online Gary is working with Jay & the Americans:
"The Vocal Group Hall of Fame band, featuring three original members (but not Jay Black), is working with longtime Steely Dan producer Gary Katz on a new album."

And that's all we know. Interesting though as we get a couple of Steely Dan connections rolled into one.
1) Gary Katz produced the first seven Steely Dan albums.
2) Kenny Vance, one of the original members in Jay & The Americans, helped Donald and Walter early on. They recorded demos as well as a soundtrack while under contract to Kenny's production company.
3) Donald and Walter briefly toured with the band.

Bonus: Here's a 1979 interview with Gary talking about producing Steely Dan.

Zeppelin plays US festival(?)

Looks like Led Zeppelin will do more reunion gigs than the one-time-only-event concert at the London O2 Arena recently.
Daily Mirror reports that Zeppelin will headline the Bonnaroo festival in Tennessee in June.
http://www.mirror.co.uk/showbiz/frontpageshowbiz
The festival runs from June 12 to 15.
Due to Daily Mirror there might even be a tour following the festival.
An insider tells the newspaper that "This is the news that will drive their fans absolutely wild."
No doubt, but let's get these news more confirmed first.
