Zappa In New York – 40th anniversary edition – 5 CD's

Ready for pre-orders. The Frank Zappa live album Zappa In New York will be re-released as a limited edition 5 CD set.

Disc 1 contains the original album, yes the censored version that was first released in March 1978. Unfortunately it is not the very first edition that was put out on the market in 1977 in very limited quantity. Some copies leaked out in stores in the UK before it got withdrawn.

The 1977 edition included the track Punky's Whips which was almost 11 minutes long. The song describes drummer Terry Bozzio's affection for Punky Meadows, member of the group Angel. On the 1978 release the record company Warner Brothers left it out since they thought it would be bad for business. As a result of that the new edition of the album (side A and B) had a slightly changed song order to balance out the length of the LP sides.

In the 90's Zappa released a remixed version of the album on a 2 CD set, including four extra tracks, one of them Punky's Whips.

Disc 2-5 of the 5 CD box include "bonus concert performances". This material will probably be the main reason why fans will ever buy this release.

Check out the entire track listing and other details here!

And...there is also a vinyl edition on 3 LP's. Check details here!

Zappa hologram tour rehearsals set for March

Guitarist Mike Keneally (who was in Frank Zappa's band in 1988) writes this: "We start rehearsals for The Bizarre World of Frank Zappa in March. We'll start announcing dates very soon."

And he continues:
"I'll say a lot more about it later, but basically, take whatever your expectations about what a Zappa hologram tour might be, and abandon them, because this is going to be an experience unlike anything that's happened to you before. From a musical standpoint, I'm delighted to be joining Joe Travers, Scott Thunes, Ray White, Robert Martin and Ed Mann in bringing Frank's amazing music to you (some of which has never been heard before), and from a visual standpoint, we are going to present something you simply won't see coming. Not gonna say more than that for now, but prepare to be truly affected by this experience."

Frank's son Ahmet:
" I’m thrilled that we’ll be doing 100 + dates around the world."

Bob Zappa has passed away

Bob Zappa, brother of Frank Zappa, passed away last night. Bob published two books about his and Frank's childhood and adult lives.
Bob worked as an assistant for Frank in the 60's but left the business for studies and to join the marines. Later he became a publisher.

In book #1, Frankie & Bobby, Growing Up Zappa (2015), Bob tells the story of their early years, about the many times the family moved and about Frank's bad relationship with their father:

"His relationship with our father was very difficult for him." (Bob Zappa, Sveriges Radio interview 2015)

Book #2, Frankie & Bobby, The Rest Of Our Story (2017), describes how the brothers see each other more and more seldom and suddenly Bobby can't even get through to Frank since Frank's wife Gail acts like a gate keeper. One day she calls him up just to tell him that Frank has died and the funeral has already taken place.

The book ends on a sad note, BUT shortly after the book was released Bob reconnected with Frank's kids Moon and Dweezil.

Charles Robert "Bob" or "Bobby" Zappa died at the age of 75.

25 years ago today – we still miss you Frank!

Today it is 25 years since Frank Zappa passed away. Today fans and old sidemen pay tribute to Frank on different Zappa and music forums on the internet.

Bass player Arthur Barrow writes on Facebook about the last time he saw Frank: in 1990

"It was a great visit, even though it was tinged with sadness. I stayed there until 1:30 in the morning - four hours, just Frank and me hanging out together with no interruptions."

Bob Zappa, one of Frank's brothers re-publishes what he wrote on Facebook on December 4, 2017, which is an excerpt from his book. It describes the very short call from Frank's wife Gail Zappa on December 5, 1993. She simply told him that Frank was dead and that there would not be a funeral since he had already been buried.

Drummer Morgan Ågren:

"On this day 1993, Frank Zappa left us. Still empty without him... "

Denny Walley, guitarist who played with Frank on several tours in the 70's has published a photo on Facebook of him and Frank.

"This photo was taken in Franks studio several months before he died.
R.I.P. friend"

Pauline Butcher, author of Freak Out! My Life With Frank Zappa:

"...as if one could ever forget him. A myriad of memories remain."

Mats and Napoleon continue their Zappa mission

Two new members added.
On Friday November 16 the Radio Dupree staff attended a concert with Zappa veteran Napoleon Murphy Brock and keyboard virtuoso Mats Öberg. The concert took place in Mats' old hometown Umeå, Sweden.

The Öberg/Brock duo that call themselves Colour Flash have been around since 2014 but now they have added two more members; guitarist Christian Bjerring and percussionist Rafael Sida. This added more width and variation to the performance, of course, while the music is still performed in a small enjoyable format. There are no more gigs planned with this quartet, but Öberg says that they hope to be able to do more shows together.
And Napoleon Murphy Brock is still one of the best showmen in the business. Catch them if you get the opportunity!

King Crimson leader Robert Fripp dancing

Guitarist Robert Fripp is not exactly known for his amazing moves on stage during shows with his group King Crimson. He usually sits still on his stool and plays his guitar with his eyes staring at the floor.

But there actually seem to be moments when mr Fripp takes the opportunity to do a little dance, in this case while interpreting his wife Toyah's new track "Telepathic Lover" from the EP Four From Toyah | Birthday Edition.

Todd Rundgren plays Zappa

Todd Rundgren debuted his version of Frank Zappa's Camarillo Brillo last night in Salisbury Beach, Massachusetts, USA.
However the lyrics were totally different. Maybe Frank would have liked it. Don't know, but anyway he would have insisted on more rehearsing.

Bozzio-O'Hearn-Cuccurullo at Zappanale

The Bozzio-O'Hearn-Cuccurullo Power Trio was probably the most interesting unit to play the Zappanale this year. For us who did not have the possibility to go to the german festival last weekend there is at least this recording. The sound quality could have been better (where is Patrick's bass?), but this is still something.

New 4 CD set: Phil Collins with McCartney, Clapton, Fripp...

Phil Collins has collected 59 tracks where he performs with other artists (Paul McCartney, Brian Eno, Tommy Bolin, Robert Fripp, John Martyn, Frida of ABBA...)

Rolling Stone reports that the title of Plays Well With Others originated from a gift from drummer Chester Thompson – a T-shirt featuring the phrase. It was meant to reflect Collins’ willingness to play drums at seemingly any recording session.

Drummer Morgan Ågren invited to play with Magma

Swedish drummer Morgan Ågren has been asked to record with the legendary French zeuhl-prog group Magma.

This is how Morgan describes this on Facebook:

"Beyond honored for this request.. In September I will go to Paris to record one track for Magma, WITH Magma!!! It’s an old track that will be re-recorded again. Christian Vander is doing the vocals on this track, just as he did in the past, so I will do the drums live with them in the studio. Overwhelmed."

Zappa siblings on good terms again?

Good news from Dweezil.
This is the latest on the Zappa kids' family issues. Dweezil Zappa writes that three of the four siblings have got together and discussed the situation:

"Recently, we Zappa siblings (Diva, Ahmet and Dweezil) got together with the goal of resolving our differences. Once we sat down and actually listened to one another, we found a much greater understanding of each other’s intentions. We regret that our communication broke down and that things were misconstrued. It may be a bumpy road at times – we are a passionate Italian family – but we have decided to work toward privately discussing issues rather than using public forums and lawyers.

We are hopeful that if any of our father’s fans have felt conflicted, they can join us in the peace of our resolution. With our best feet forward, we are moving ahead and will faithfully deliver much more of our father’s indefinable brilliance, also known as the “World’s Finest Optional Entertainment.”

Thank you for your passion and love for our father. We can assure you, we all feel the same about him."

Hear Donald Fagen guesting on Derek Small's "Memo To Willie"!

"Smalls Change feels much like the Spinal Tap reunion album from 1992, Break Like The Wind — if the original This is Spinal Tap soundtrack remains a peerless, note-perfect parody of musical moronicism (much like the film itself), both Break and Smalls Change are amusing additions to the canon with their own twists to share."

Quote from the NPR article accompanying the first listen to the debut album by fictional bass player Derek Smalls (i.e. Harry Shearer) from the likewise fictional hard rock band Spinal Tap.

So you can approach it more or less negatively or choose to go the positive route and enjoy the songs for what they are played by a plethora of great musicians:

Jeff “Skunk” Baxter (Steely Dan, Doobie Brothers)
Gregg Bissonette
Larry Carlton
David Crosby
Donald Fagen (Steely Dan)
Taylor Hawkins
Jim Keltner
Danny (Kootch) Kortchmar
Russ Kunkel
Michael League (Snarky Puppy)
Jane Lynch (actress/singer)
Steve Lukather (Toto)
Judith Owen
Snarky Puppy Horns
Joe Satriani
Paul Shaffer (David Letterman, SNL, etc.)
Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers)
Richard Thompson
Steve Vai
Waddy Wachtel
Rick Wakeman (Yes)
Phil X
Dweezil Zappa

Funny liner notes and more here:

The album is released April 13 but you can here it via the link now.

The Roxy Performances – a tasty little sucker

Most of the fans that have ordered the Roxy 7 CD set have probably received it by now. Or if you want a cheaper alternative; go to streaming services as Spotify and enjoy the entire collection.
These shows have been awaited for years and considered as the holy grail of Zappa music. Well these four shows from The Roxy in Hollywood December 1973 sure are something, but of course there are pieces that are not really terrific. Some songs have not found there final format (Dickie's Such An Asshole) and there are songs where the vocals are not really top notch. On the Roxy & Elsewhere album (1974) Zappa picked the best takes of the four shows and added vocal overdubs to reach perfection. But this band is one of the funkiest incarnations of The Mothers ever, and their skilled performances are full of joy.

Personal favorite: That Arrogant Dick Nixon. One of the "bonus" rehearsal tracks. A version of The Idiot Bastard Son with new lyrics about Richard Nixon. Yeas, that was back in the days of Watergate. Someone could easily update those lyrics.

Donald Fagen's 1991 The New York Rock and Soul Revue: Live at the Beacon out on vinyl

Originally released on CD in 1991 and featuring tracks recorded early 1991 The New York Rock and Soul Revue: Live at the Beacon has just been released as a two LP 140 gram vinyl album.

Let us quote Wikipedia here:

The New York Rock and Soul Revue was a musical project which evolved from a series of concerts and musical shows produced by Libby Titus (future wife of Donald Fagen) that lasted from 1989 to 1992.
The project was led by Donald Fagen (soloist and co-founder of Steely Dan) and included Phoebe Snow, Michael McDonald, Boz Scaggs, Eddie Brigati (formerly of The Rascals), David Brigati (also of The Rascals), Charles Brown, and Walter Becker (soloist and co-founder of Steely Dan).

The project also featured Jeff Young and the Youngsters, saxophonist Cornelius Bumpus (who had formerly worked with Steely Dan, the Doobie Brothers and Boz Scaggs), and violinist Mindy Jostyn. The project is perhaps best known for its 1991 live release entitled The New York Rock and Soul Revue: Live at the Beacon, a compilation of material recorded live at New York City's Beacon Theater.

This project was part in Steely Dan reuniting and touring in 1993. And the rest is, as the saying goes, history.

Happy Birthday, Donald Fagen! (70 today)

Donald Fagen is 70 today and besides wishing him a Happy birthday we at Radio Dupree wish to remind all that his collection Cheap XMas: Donald Fagen Complete - originally a digital only release in October 2012 - now is available as a five CD and seven vinyl record box set.

It features all of his solo albums; The Nightfly (1982), Kamakiriad (1993), Morph the Cat (2006) and Sunken Condos (2012) + ten extra non-album tracks. Nothing new here. It's basically his Nightfly Trilogy box from 2007 plus Sunken Condos.

Still worth getting for the completist waiting for his next solo album. He's said that he wants to record with the gang of guys named The Nightflyers that he toured with last year.

We had a look at Amazon and see that the out of print Nightfly Trilogy box set from 2007 is ... expensive (at least on Amazon. Current EBay price a mere $120):

And we're lucky to own two signed copies(*) from way back when...

(*) = not for sale!
