Looks like Steely Dan is touring in 2014

After each and every Steely Dan tour the fans have wondered if there will be a new tour next year. And the aftermath to the 2013 tour hasn't been any different.

An added difficulty is that drummer Keith Carlock who's played with Steely Dan since 2003 early this year announced that he's joining Toto. Keith has been in the studio recording with his new band and Toto has 2014 tour dates lined up that would make it hard to fit in another long Steely Dan trek like the most recent. And as Steely Dan lately has toured every other year; 2009, 2011 and 2013, it could perhaps indicate that 2014 would be a no-tour year.

But a Facebook update from Toto member Steve Lukather may be interpreted as saying that Steely Dan will be on the road again this year:

Well NEVER dull in Toto world. As it seems the news is
OUT.. yes we are very happy and honored to have Hungate and do the USA tour with us. Nathan is busy with Foreplay and his solo career now and is leaving. He was great but like Simon.. He needed to go with his own career and we are all still great friends. That is ALL I am saying for now. Keith is the only drummer on our record and will be IN the band but there is ONE last Steely Dan tour he was committed to this Aug BEFORE we asked him to join. The amazing drummer and pal Shannon Forrest is going to do the USA dates with us and Keith will return. 2015 permanately.

So, apparently, "there is ONE last Steely Dan tour he was committed to this August". And that looks like another autumn tour for Steely Dan. Right?

UPDATE March 30, 2014:

Yes. The tour will happen. Click here for all our posts about the Jamalot Ever After 2014 tour.

Keith Carlock new Toto drummer!

Photo: Tom Schwartz
Drummer Keith Carlock will join legendary group Toto according to the band's website:

It has also been announced that long-time member drummer Simon Phillips will be departing the band to pursue his solo career and other interests.
Luke shares, "He is still a dear friend and we wish him the very best and continued success,"
The band welcomes new addition Keith Carlock (Steely Dan, Sting, James Taylor, John Mayer).  Carlock originally hails from Clinton, Mississippi, and has collaborated with Luke in the past in the jam band Toxic Monkey.

Will Keith be leaving the Steely Dan lineup he's been part of for the past ten-or-so years?
We doubt it. We're sure that Keith can keep both gigs.

Here's a couple of "Steely Dan-quotes" from Keth's website:

Donald Fagen on Keith :

"Keith's attitude, his enthusiasm, and everything is just great. When you're cutting tracks like we do, the band will get to a certain point when things are working and everything coalesces, and everybody realizes they are now going to play a take. To get there you need not just the drummer, but everybody to have refined their parts.

We had that with this band, thanks in large part to Keith. We would get to that point and converge on something, and he would give us a take we could really work with."

Walter Becker on Keith:

"...we're trying to re-create a kind of rhythmic feel that predates the drum machine era, where it's really a feel generated by the players, something that has a swing and a lope to it and still has hypnotically steady time.

With Keith, everything he tried to play worked in that way. He also began with a good idea of where a tune was supposed to go, and he got better as we played it. He actually made this whole thing possible... His groove is just as good at the end of the day as it is at the beginning."

(And we can't help thinking about all the hardcore Steely Dan fans who'd like to be in Zia's place just there and then! :) )

Steely Dan: A new album still not out of the question

With the start of the 2013 tour less than a week away Donald Fagen and Walter Becker have been doing interviews that are starting to appear here and there.

Here's one Donald did with Los Angeles radio station KLOS.
(Is that a Frank Zappa reference at the 1 minute mark?)

And here's Billboard's article on the upcoming tour.

If you've read/listened to interviews for previous tours they pretty much rehash the same subjects once more.

One such subject is the possibility of a new Steely Dan album. The most recent one titled Everything Must Go was released ten years ago back in 2003.
The Billboard article takes Walter's answer as the headline:

New Steely Dan Album? 'It's In the Air'

The quote in full reads

"It's in the air, it really is. It's just a smell now. The next thing is then you taste it, then you start to feel it. You know how this goes."

Donald Fagen added that they have "some songs, these really good ones that we only half-finished back in, like, 1984 that we keep threatening to work on."

And Walter added that they actually finished a couple of those.

"Any other band in the world would have finished or mixed these old things that were lying around and issued them with a great ta-da fanfare. But we just don't. We don't play it like that, necessarily. It's not the way we roll."

Cue excitement from the fans, but even if it has been worded a bit differently in past interviews we've always known that ideas for a new album has been discussed and a new Steely Dan album a real possibility. News - and sad news at that - would've been hearing Donald and Walter say that they've decided that Everything Must Go is the final one from Steely Dan and whatever more music they make as Steely Dan will be touring.

As far as the 2013 tour goes we have speculated in the possible addition of dates abroad after they finish up in New York on October 8. Japan? Australia/New Zealand? Europe?
In our blog post in May our assumption was that it probably won't happen, and now that drummer Keith Carlock has updated his touring page with information saying he'll be playing in Europe with Mike Stern Band October 11 - 31, well...

Donald Fagen on Letterman tonight! (Thursday November 15)

With conflicting info initially saying the day is as either Thursday November 15 or Friday November 16, the final word seem to be November 15.

Here's a few social media updates. Connect the dots and you get the band members as well as the song being played on The Letterman Show. We're hoping for a second tune one to appear as a web exclusive on the Letterman homepage...

UPDATE November 16:

So, who's on Sunken Condos?

Jamie Leonhart as pictured on the cover of her 2010 album The Truth About Suffering.
With Donald Fagen's new solo album Sunken Condos arriving October 16 curious fans are wondering who'll play and sing on the album apart from Donald himself and co-producer Michael Leonhart.

Rumour has it that long time Steely Dan drummer Keith Carlock does not play on the record. In fact, one major line of discussion amongst fans right now is the pros and cons of programmed drums and drum machines.

The official press release for Sunken Condos states
Some familiar names from the Steely Dan family of players are on hand (Jon Herington, the Steely Dan horns, Freddie Washington) plus some new faces.

And that's it. Come to think of it it doesn't even mention Michael Leonhart, but since at least part of the record was recorded in his New York studio we expect him to pick up and add an instrument here, and an instrument there.

Two certain members of the Sunken Condos players/singers are Jamie Leonhart and Gary Sieger. Jamie writes "I've sung on some great recordings including Donald Fagen's new record, "Sunken Condos" coming out on October 16" and Gary was mentioned by Steely Dan fan and friend-to-the-stars Pete Fogel on a facebook group as playing guitar on one track.

That's what's known so far.

Rudder show + DVD recording in New York

http://www.ruddermusic.comWe just got the latest newsletter from Rudder in our mailbox. In just two days time the band will play its first gig in New York for more than a year. The show will be recorded for a DVD. Here are the details:

Hello Folks!

We just finished 5 weeks of touring in Europe. We had an amazing trip and we are looking forward to returning next year!

On Dec 1, (this Wednesday), we are playing in NYC at Rockwood Music Hall in the #2 venue (the bigger stage).

This is a special night for us as we are going to be recording a new live DVD - shot with multiple cameras in HD.

We will be sharing our evening with our great friends -- and a KICK ASS BAND -- Snarky Puppy.

You definitely want to check them out.

We expect this to be a pretty full show - as we haven't played in NYC with the full band for over a year.

You can purchase advance tickets on the Rockwood site here:

$15 gets you in for both bands!

Steely Dan 2008: Playing in Europe? Not likely...

It's a bit of a pipe dream, but living in Europe we're allowed to nurture it. And after last year's world tour we imagined that just maybe, just maybe, Steely Dan would take the 2008 tour abroad as well.

With the latest update to drummer Keith Carlock's homepage those dreams look set to stay just dreams. Keith will be on tour with his own band Rudder in September and Wayne Krantz in October.
Somehow we find it hard to see Steely Dan touring with a different drummer. And going back on the road in November?

Over on steelydan.com they've gigs listed until August 9, so theoretically they could add a few international dates for the remainder of the month. Hmmm... OK. It's back to dreaming!

But before we go a question:
Carly Simon has just released her first album of new songs in eight years. It's called This Kind Of Love and has a clear Steely Dan connection. What is that connection?
No, it's not drummer Rick Marotta who also played on Gaucho, Aja and The Royal Scam.
The correct answer to the question will be posted here this weekend if we don't get it in the comments to this post!

Ponderlingly yours,
N.S.
