Donald Fagen playing on David Crosby's upcoming album

Since Radio Dupree was started with a special dose of affinity for Steely Dan and Frank Zappa, we do keep an extra pair of eyes open for any news about those artists. So excuse us for the headline beginning with Donald and not David.

July 23, 2021 is the date David Crosby will release his album For Free. Roughly one month before he turns 80.

Among the musicians on the record is Donald Fagen, who's latest solo album Sunken Condos was released in 2012. He has kept a low profile as far as new recordings go and instead opted for touring as Steely Dan. He has, however, appeared on other musicians recordings. And this is the latest example.

Meanwhile Steely Dan is set to tour again starting in May, 2022, It's the twice postponed 2020 Earth After Hours Tour with Steve Winwood that hopefully will go live next year after the pandemic situation has been sorted out.

Anyway, here's a preview track from For Free written by David's son James Raymond and Michael McDonald (Another Steely Dan connection!):

Donald Fagen's 1991 The New York Rock and Soul Revue: Live at the Beacon out on vinyl

Originally released on CD in 1991 and featuring tracks recorded early 1991 The New York Rock and Soul Revue: Live at the Beacon has just been released as a two LP 140 gram vinyl album.

Let us quote Wikipedia here:

The New York Rock and Soul Revue was a musical project which evolved from a series of concerts and musical shows produced by Libby Titus (future wife of Donald Fagen) that lasted from 1989 to 1992.
The project was led by Donald Fagen (soloist and co-founder of Steely Dan) and included Phoebe Snow, Michael McDonald, Boz Scaggs, Eddie Brigati (formerly of The Rascals), David Brigati (also of The Rascals), Charles Brown, and Walter Becker (soloist and co-founder of Steely Dan).

The project also featured Jeff Young and the Youngsters, saxophonist Cornelius Bumpus (who had formerly worked with Steely Dan, the Doobie Brothers and Boz Scaggs), and violinist Mindy Jostyn. The project is perhaps best known for its 1991 live release entitled The New York Rock and Soul Revue: Live at the Beacon, a compilation of material recorded live at New York City's Beacon Theater.

This project was part in Steely Dan reuniting and touring in 1993. And the rest is, as the saying goes, history.

Writer of Michael Jackson's "Thriller" dies

He was known as "The invisible man" thanks to keeping a low profile, but Rod Temperton was one of the most successful songwriters of the 1970's and 1980's.

The big one was of course Thriller that Michael Jackson recorded, but he penned quite a few more beginning with Boogie Nights for the band Heatwave were he was one of the members. Here's that and a few other of his hits.

Rod Temperton passed away last week. BBC has more on that and Rod here.

Steely Dan 2013 tour in July - October?

A possible tour for Steely Dan in 2013 has been mentioned by Donald Fagen in interviews, but nothing has been confirmed yet. It's usually March, April before any news of a new tour is official.

That being said a post on the dandom.com Bluebook where Steely Dan fans gather has reminded the fans of a (possible) tour in 2013.

The cryptic "7/13-10/13" from regular poster Lewis - with a great track record of cryptic but correct inside information - has been interpreted as meaning the tour will start in July and end in October.

Someone suggested that if this really is a sign of a 2013 tour it could just as well be another one for The Dukes Of September (Fagen, Michael McDonald and Boz Scaggs).

We wait. And see.

UPDATE March 7, 2013: Yes! Two dates out in the open. See more here.
