Radio Dupree 2013 Advent calendar 16-20

[Window 16]

One of our heroes in broadcasting is Alan Partridge. After watching this interview he did with The Who's Roger Daltrey we're sure that you agree!

[Window 17]

Year-end charts come in all shapes and sizes. Often with the same artists and albums mentioned again and again. For an alternative view we give you this from Vice:

http://www.vice.com/read/vices-top-50-albums-of-2013

[Window 18]

Did Hip-hop start at this one party? Interersting read from BBC:

[Window 19]

And how about music done for television. Can you find genius and creativity there to rival any classic recording from a studio or stage? Of course!

Radio Dupree 2013 Advent calendar 11-15

So, here we go! We stopped our Advent calendar after Window 10 on December 10. Why? Because we had an idea.
And after letting all the other calendars finish December 24, we now have the luxury of being the only Advent calendar still alive and filling those final few hours of 2013 with the remaining 14 windows we have in store.

Here's 11 - 15:

[Window 11]

Let's begin with a new oldie. The Gramovox Bluetooth gramophone 1920s inspired by the 1920 Magnavox R3 horn speaker. Yours for $299 and up if you get your order in before the end of the year:

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/gramovox/gramovoxtm-bluetooth-gramophone

[Window 12]

With YouTube the most popular music place these days we thought we'd take a look at the year end global chart and finding very little to excite us. Miley Cyrus, Rhianna and so on... A bit more interesting or at least not played to death music can be heard on the various country charts collected by Buzzfeed in this article:

http://www.buzzfeed.com/krisandres/the-2013-most-trending-domestic-music-videos-on-yo-6qn0

[Window 13]

Do we still buy physical records over here at Radio Dupree? Yes, we do! And in contrast to all the music charting behidn Window 13 here's Neb Stephenson's final store find for 2013:

[Window 14]

And while we're on the subject of physical records we wonder if this might be the answer to a question we ponder now and then. "How big can a CD-box be?"
It's Karajan 1938-1960 released about a year ago. A box set of ... 117 CD's!

[Window 15]

And as far as year end charts go the 50 Worst Albums of 2013 from Vice is now and again a slightly smile-inducing read. Although we haven't heard much of the music they sometimes get around to mentioning inbetween bursts of ... well, go check it out for yourself.

Led Zeppelin albums now streaming exclusively on Spotify

Led Zeppelin has been cautious of making its recordnings available online. The remastered catalogue was issued on iTunes as late as a year ago and now comes the news that all albums will be available for streaming exclusively on Spotify.

Press-release

Led Zeppelin's arrival on Spotify also is a nail in the coffin for the cover band LedZepAgain. The band has enjoyed sex-figure revenues annually from Spotify according to this article on ultimateclassicrock.com.

How far off can the day be when AC/DC and The Beatles join the party?

Zappa Roxy By Proxy CD delayed again

We just can't wait long enough for the Roxy by Proxy soundtrack CD, right? Just got the message that our order is still on back order: "We anticipate that your order will ship within the next 2 – 3 weeks." Sigh!
The CD could be a welcome preview to the loooong awaited Roxy DVD (Frank & The Mothers live 1973). Something to nibble on while waiting for the film to be ready for release. In July Barfko-Swill announced that they were ready to take pre-orders. In September: "We are experiencing delays in the manufacturing process so we will be shipping to you somewhat later."

Also in the latest e-mail: "Please accept our apology for the continued delay...."
Radio Dupree station manager Neb Stephenson comments: "Do they make those CD:s by hand, one at the time?"

Radio Dupree 2013 Advent calendar: December 4

We searched for "radio" on a popular video streaming site and hit upon this:

[Window Number 4!]

Some of our favorite intros (420 to be exact) are in this mix we did for BBC Radio1 a while ago, and it is actually quite a good introduction to the rest of Radio Soulwax, as a lot of tracks that are featured in this hour will come back in later shows to follow. The animated sleeves illustrate the mix and give it a whole new dimension!

Radio Dupree 2013 Advent calendar: December 3

[Window Number 3!]

[UPDATE December 8: Hey! So what or who swallowed the content here? Link, video or whatever gone... If we'd kept any sort of list of what we blog each time we could've re-created the content, but as it is... Well, you'll have to settle for a bunch of Japanese celebrities + American movie actor Tommy Lee Jones singing a line each of the classic hit Sukiyaki/上を向いて歩こうmade famous by Kyu Sakamoto/坂本 九in 1961/1963.

Trivia: Apparently done to raise money after the 2011 earthquake and tsunami. Tommy has a house in Kyoto. At least that's what the Internet says...

OK. Let's see if this sticks behind Advent calendar window numer 3...]

Zappafest on Radio Dupree - in memory of Frank

Radio Dupree 2013 Advent calendar: December 1

And with the first of December we'd like to introduce our own Advent calendar not really sure what we'll find behind each "window", but there will be one a day until Christmas.

So... first out we'd like to tell a story of Christmas that involves some people opening a 15 000 square feet/1 400 square meter large record store. Yes, you read that right. A record store. In these days of online buying and listening how can anybody make reality of opening a store where you're supposed go to buy music on physical formats like ... er ... what is that silvery thing from the 1980's called? Yes, CD! And no small store at that.

Are we just making this up or ... could it be true? The answer is behind

Q: So what's weird and new with this month's chart?
A: No Zappa and no Steely Dan (including Fagen and Becker solo stuff) recordings present!

And the short but sweet eight titles long chart is one of the oddest in Radio Dupree history. The mix. See for yourself. And thanks to all who voted up and/or down favourites helping us compile this.

Zappa live in Helsinki 1973 available now

Road Tapes Venue #2 is here!
http://barfkoswill.shop.musictoday.com/Dept.aspx?cp=971_63113

Zappa.com says "As you know these are the more primitive audio documentary attempts to capture the essence of life on the road." Well, over at the Radio Dupree staff we feel that we are happy to take that risk! Finally we get a full release featuring the Ponty band. That era has been even more of a missing link than the Lady Bianca band was until we got Philly '76.

Lou Reed dead at 71

The legendary rock musician Lou Reed has died. He recently underwent a liver transplantation.
In the 60's Reed was one of the members of the group The Velvet Underground. After the break up of VU Reed started a solo carreer. Walk on the Wild Side, White Light/White Heat and Satellite of Love are some of his songs. Radio Dupree claims that Lou Reed's huge influence on popular music can not be overestimated.

200 Motels on stage in L.A. and London

Frank Zappa's music suite 200 Motels seems to be havng a revival. It is not replayed "just" like the soundtrack but has more emphasis on the orchestral parts. On October 25 there was a performance by Esa-Pekka Salonen and The Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. The staged play that took place in The Walt Disney Concert Hall (in L.A.) got fair but not overwhelming reviews in Los Angeles Times.

On October 29 200 Motels will be performed in Royal Festival Hall in London, by "the full forces of the BBC Concert Orchestra, Southbank Sinfonia, London Voices and a large cast of rock musicians, singers and actors." Zappa's daughter Diva will play one of the groupies. Zappa bassplayer Scott Thunes will play the band member Jeff Simmons. Conductor: Jurjen Hempel.

On October 26 the film 200 Motels was shown as part of the 60's film series at the Southbank Centre in London.
Gail Zappa is also in UK now and gave this interview to BBC Radio 4.

Slate Book Review on Donald Fagen's Eminent Hipsters

No extra points for the headline of the review; "Reelin' in the Years", but the review in itself does shed some light on what the book is all about. More than a collection of texts and perhaps a glimpse of Donald Fagen if you're prepared to lay the puzzle. Here's at least one sizeable bit.

Eminent Hipsters will be out October 22, 2013.

Here's a link to the review complete with an illustration by Peter Bagge.

Prefab Sprout - The Best Jewel Thief In The World

Prefab Sprout's new album Crimson/Red has already gotten full points from the critics. So no surprises there...

We've heard the first "single" and find it a real corker. What do you think?

Album of the Month for October 2013: David Bowie - Pin Ups

Our Album of the Month (#209) for October 2013 is David Bowie's Pin Ups!

The album cover with Bowie posing with model Twiggy is one of his iconic ones from the 70's. (Yes, it's actually 40 years since it was released).

This is a collection of cover versions, Bowie favourites from the 1964–67 period. Songs by Kinks, The Who and Pink Floyd to name a few. A neat collection of songs but maybe recorded in a bit of a hurry. The previous album Aladdin Sane was released less than six months before Pin Ups.

One may think that it is a mystery why the best cover song from the period was not released until 1990, when two bonus tracks were added to the Rykodisc cd reissue. We are talking about Growin' Up by Bruce Springsteen, a superior version of a song from Springsteen's Greetings From Asbury Park album that had been released earlier that year. The explanation is that the recording of Growin' Up did not take place during the Pin Ups sessions, but later when Pin Ups was already released during the early sessions for the following album Diamond Dogs. Also, the song by the then rather unknown American artist Bruce Springsteen may not have fitted in with Bowie's idea to do songs from the 60's that were not known as well in the States as they were in England.

P.S.
Today is the day that the 2013 version of the song Sound And Vision is released. And later tis month we'll be able to hear a never-aired 1973 promo for Pin Ups on Spotify. So it's definitely Bowie month here in October.

Wishing we were in New York...

Walter and Donald. Photo by Danny Clinch
Photo: Danny Clinch/steelydan.com
Sitting here in the Radio Dupree station cottage surrounded by an escalating attack from a chilly and dark autumn where even twisted happy pop from Japan on repeat is having a hard time helping us keep our bright and sunny disposition, it is easy to wish we were - like 2011 - back in New York to enjoy Steely Dan at The Beacon Theatre.

The band is in the middle of the seven show run that will finish the Mood Swings 2013: 8 Miles To Pancake Day tour:

* Sep 30 Aja - Plus Selected Hits
* Oct 01 Greatest Hits Night
* Oct 03 Royal Scam Plus Selected Hits
* Oct 04 Gaucho - Plus Selected Hits
* Oct 05 Audience Request Night
* Oct 07 Aja - Plus Selected Hits
* Oct 08 Greatest Hits Night

A special shout-out to Reidar from Norway who will have to represent not only Norway but Sweden and perhaps all of Scandinavia as he is there once again for all seven shows.
We had the pleasure and privilege of meeting him last time together with a whole bunch of other friendly and fine fans of Steely Dan.

Walter Becker had to leave stage a few songs into the show Tuesday due to a fever. Here's hoping he's feeling better today

03 Plan

08 I’ll Take You There

In addition to the physical release of The Next Day Extra, there will be a 7-track digital EP bundle featuring these tracks.

The news have raised several critical comments from fans on Facebook, of which we have chosen to citate a few: "Milking the customer cow", "Jeez, he sure does know how to make the most of his 'bonus material'." "I ordered The Next Day from Japan especially for exclusive bonus tracks, and now they are released in this expensive 3 disc box?" A few positive comments too: "If you don't want it you simply don't buy it and stick to your existing copy of a great album - or just buy the EP with the new tracks on it."

King Crimson 2013

From the diary of Robert Fripp the entry dated September 6:

So, King Crimson is in motion. This is a very different reformation to what has gone before: seven players, four English and three American, with three drummers.
The Seven-Headed Beast of Crim is in Go! mode.
And those seven are apparently Robert Fripp, John Wetton, Mel Collins, Gavin Harrison, Pat Mastelotto, Tony Levin and Bill Rieflin.

SEPTEMBER 26 CORRECTION and UPDATE:

The actual line-up is Fripp, Gavin Harrison, Bill Rieflin, Tony Levin, Pat Mastelotto, Mel Collins and Jakko Jakszyk.
And Robert writes that due to each individuals previous engagements it will be a year before this version of King Crimson is able to perform.

David Bowie Pin Ups radio show revealed

To mark the 40th anniversary of David Bowie's album Pin Ups, Spotify will stream a special promo program originally recorded in 1973 but never used.
The David Bowie Pin Ups Radio Show will be streamed on Spotify on October 28th. I was originally produced as a promotional tool for the release of the record in 1973, but was by some reason never used.

David Bowie (official) announces the event like this on Facebook:
"The radio show features snippets from Pin Ups interspersed with brief but nevertheless wonderful observations from Bowie regarding the bands he covers on the album, wherein he adopts his very best mockney to recall his days as a mod during the period. It's great fun and you’re going to love it."

Chart compiled by listeners voting
on the songs they hear on Radio Dupree

Another month has passed and we bring you the-shortest-Radio-Dupree-chart-ever. Yep, it's just three places long. Not 20 as we usually present it.
But this tijme around these were the only songs that got any reaction from our listeners, so...

It is a Steely Dannish top 3 at that. The number one tune is from a brand new CD with jazzy covers of SD tracks. We wrote about it here. Number two is Swedish band State Cows that started out playing SD covers. These days they have two albums of original material.
And at number three we find Steely Dan itself with one of our favourite tracks.

Keep on listening and if you hear something you like give it a thumbs up. If it's something you don't like a thumbs down. That way we know what to remove and add to the ever-changing playlist and also get a chart of listeners favourites once a month.

Nazareth lead vocalist retires due to bad health

Dan McCafferty, singer in Scottish band Nazareth has been forced to retire.
http://www.nazarethdirect.co.uk/website/news/ explains that McCafferty suffers from C.O.P.D. (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease):
"It has gotten worse lately and after trying to play a festival in Switzerland last weekend Dan found it impossible to continue after performing only three songs. In the dressing room afterwards he told the band that he couldn’t go on any longer."

Recently singer Linda Ronstadt told AARP Magazine that she can not sing anymore since she is diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. "No one can sing with Parkinson’s disease,” said Ronstadt to AARP.  “No matter how hard you try.”

Very sad indeed.

Legendary concert promoter Fritz Rau dies

The German concert promoter Fritz Rau passed away on August 19, at the age of 83. He became a legend in the trade and used to be mentioned as the man who brought the rock stars to Germany.
Fritz Rau organized concerts with Jimi Hendrix, The Rolling Stones, Madonna and many, many more. Frank Zappa mentioned Fritz Rau in one of his songs, Shall We Take Ourselves Seriously?

Roger Waters and The Wall 2013 in Gothenburg, Sweden a success

The show is over and Radio Dupree's man on the spot at Ullevi Stadium in Gothenburg was pleased with Roger Waters and The Wall as it looks and sounds 2013.

It's a surround sound multimedia extravaganza featuring peaks like the appearance of the giant puppets, i.e. the schoolmaster and the pig.
Radio Dupree's man in the audience says this is the most spectacular rock show he has ever attended: "The surround effects were fantastic! A few minutes into the show I almost believed that there was an aircraft that was about to crash land in the middle of the stadium".

The music was mostly true to the album, with minor differences as a couple of pieces that he'd never heard before as well as a few songs being slightly rearranged. Roger Waters looked to be in good shape and a happy mood. So thumbs up from The Wall from our concert attendee!

The local newspaper GP reviews the concert here (in Swedish) giving it a 4 out of 5 rating. A couple of translated senteces:

Popular culture is full of fools who assume the mantle madness and we should be extremely thankful for that. Otherwise we would have never known Roger Waters and been able to experience one of the most spectacular rock shows ever. This year's stadium edition of The Wall is signed by a man who moste likely is just that: both beautiful and challenging.

2013 The Wall is so packed with expression and impression that it is hard to take everything in.

The reviewer's only criticism is the anti-war propaganda, calling it "naive and over explicit".

Yet it is impossible to resist the force of the show. When the helicopter wings and hail of bullets are slamming into you from the surround system at Ullevi you can not help but be amazed.

"If you don't eat yer meat, you can't have any pudding!" The schoolmaster on stage.
Time will tell if this really is the very last tour performing The Wall. Ten shows remain before the grande finale in Paris, France September 21.

GP also tells the story of how a handwritten letter from Roger Waters reached Gothenburg's Mayor Anneli Hulthén two years ago. Written on a paper napkin it says:

"My Dear Mayor!
My old friend Thomas, well he´s not that old! But you know what I mean! Happened to mention that Göteborg has not only the best Symphony Orchestra in Sweden but also a great annual festival. Also that he might persuade you to consider a semi staged concert version of my opera "CA IRA" (There is Hope) for inclusion. Should that happen, I would be very happy. Thank you for your consideration!
Roger Waters"

Book title: Eminent Hipsters. Author: Donald Fagen

We were sure we'd done a blog post about Donald Fagen's book Eminent Hipsters, but apparently not!

Well, not to worry, as there's some brand new news regarding that book coming here. Together with what we should've posted in that post that never was posted. Until now.

The book was mentioned in passing by Donald during Sunken Condos interviews late last year, but here are the facts:

Title: Eminent Hipsters
Publisher: Viking Adult
Publication date: October 22, 2013
176 pages.
ISBN 9780670025510

There's also an audio book version released by Penguin Audio on the same date. Five hours, four CD:s and read by Donald Fagen himself.
ISBN 9781611762198

Here's how the publisher presents the book and author:

A witty, revealing, sharply written work of memoir and criticism by the cofounder of Steely Dan

Musician and songwriter Donald Fagen presents a group of vivid set pieces in his entertaining debut as an author, from portraits of the cultural figures and currents that shaped him as a youth to an account of his college days and of life on the road.

Fagen begins by introducing the “eminent hipsters” that spoke to him as he was growing up in a bland New Jersey suburb in the early 1960s, among them Jean Shepherd, whose manic nightly broadcasts out of WOR-Radio “enthralled a generation of alienated young people”; Henry Mancini, whose swank, noirish soundtracks left their mark on him; and Mort Fega, the laid-back, knowledgeable all-night jazz man at WEVD who was like “the cool uncle you always wished you had.” He writes of how, coming of age during the paranoid Cold War era, one of his primary doors of escape became reading science fiction, and of his invigorating trips into New York City to hear jazz. “Class of ’69” recounts Fagen’s colorful, mind-expanding years at Bard College, the progressive school north of New York City, where he first met his future musical partner Walter Becker. “With the Dukes of September” offers a cranky, hilarious account of the ups and downs of a recent cross-country tour Fagen made with Boz Scaggs and Michael McDonald, performing a program of old R&B and soul tunes as well as some of their own hits.

Acclaimed for the elaborate arrangements and jazz harmonies of his songs, Fagen proves himself a sophisticated writer with a very distinctive voice in this engaging book.

And the very latest is that Donald will do a short promo tour with five dates listed over at the Penguin Group's homepage:

UK premiere of Zappa's 200 Motels after 42 years

Frank Zappa swore he would never return to Britain unless he got an apology from the Queen after the Royal Albert Hall cancelled a concert with the music from his film 200 Motels in 1971. Zappa did eventually return to the UK but died without getting an apology from anybody. Now there will be redress of a kind when the show is finally given its UK premiere.

Pink Floydmania in Gothenburg

Roger Waters. Photo: kulturkalaset.goteborg.com
Gothenburg in Sweden seems to be the place to be this week for fans of Pink Floyd and/or Roger Waters. Tonight there is a performance of Water's opera Ça Ira with Waters as narrator and on Saturday August 17 there is a performance of The Wall.
Ça Ira will be performed with Göteborgs Symfoniker outdoors at Götaplatsen and is free of charge. The Wall will be staged at Ullevi and Radio Dupree will have a reporter in the audience at that event.
