Does the Redditch Advertiser know something the rest of us don't?

In a short article about Steely Dan coming to Birmingham the Redditch Advertiser writes :

"Walter Becker and Donald Fagen from the band have said that they will be playing all their hits including samples from Fagen's recently released Morph The Cat and Becker's forthcoming solo release."

Probably false, but interesting if true, as Steely Dan has kept the setlist firmly on Steely Dan tunes with not one Morph The Cat och Becker track appearing in the States.
Radio Dupree doubts that Donald and Walter will change the setlist that drastically for the European shows in July.

Genesis ... at the movies tonight!

Genesis

Genesis may play in Germany tonight on their European tour, but we'll catch 'em in a small town with a population of just under 800!
How?
With the help of modern technology we'll be able to see a live feed via satellite from Dortmund, Germany with 5.1 sound "as it happens". 20 small towns in Sweden with an audience maximun of 4 000 get the chance thanks to Folkets Hus och Parker.

They've done this previously with shows from David Bowie and Robbie Williams, and we'll be back with a full report on how "live" it felt in that dark movie theatre in Lövånger.

Sam joins Steely for Europe

Sam Yahel
The Sam Yahel Organ Trio was the opening act for most US shows on the current Heavy Rollers tour. It has now been confirmed that it's also the opening act for most European shows, i.e. the non-jazz festival ones.

Just two things... plus the weekly chart

Time to take a look at the weekly top 10 as we move away from the Midsummer weekend marking the top of summer here in Sweden. Hopefully still a whole lot of sunny days left, but the hours of daylight are now officially shrinking towards autumn and winter.

But that's still a long, long way away.

Labyrinth cover1. David Bowie - As The World Falls Down - Labyrinth (soundtrack)
2. Tom Waits - Long Way Home - Orphans
3. Walter Becker & John Beasley - Hudson Hump - Mose The Fireman
=. Steely Dan - Only A Fool Would Say That - Can't Buy A Thrill
=. Genesis - The Carpet Crawlers - The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway
6. David Bowie - Eight Line Poem - Hunky Dory
7. Frank Zappa & The Mothers - I'm The Slime - Single version (different guitar solo)
=. Frank Zappa - Son Of Mr. Green Genes - Hot Rats
9. Frank Zappa & The Mothers - Anyway The Wind Blows - Swiss Cheese (Beat The Boots II)
=. Frank Zappa & Captain Beefheart - Muffin Man - Bongo Fury

Bowie on top this week with a song from one of those movies that a) included David in the cast b) got so-so reviews and c) didn't become the success it was supposed to be. At the same time it's the type of movie that a few years down the line has upgraded its reputation. Not that we'll be seeing it anytime soon.

What we will see is Genesis live. More on that in a sentence or two as soon as we've noted that Tom Waits is the surprise this week. Usually not that well achieved by our listeners. Let's see how he does on the monthly top 20 due early July as we update the Radio Dupree homepage.

So, back to Genesis. As mentioned in a post earlier this week, fans of the group can see them live in Germany piped by satellite to selected cinemas in Sweden. Too good an offer to pass, so on the eve of the 27 Radio Dupree will board the station vehicles and travel to Lövånger to catch Genesis live in glorious digital splendor and 5.1 sound. Expect our experience it to be blogged here!

And coming up on Tuesday the 26 is 24 hours of no Radio Dupree. We'll be off the air. Most live365.com stations take part in the Day of silence action to protest against proposed high increases in the royalty rates for online broadcasting. Read more by clicking the link. We'll be back online on the 27.

Fagen trilogy delayed

Got a letter from donaldfagen.com today regarding the boxed set we ordered a few weeks ago:

"Dear Fans,

Thank you for pre-ordering the Donald Fagen Trilogy Box Set, which was scheduled to ship to you this Friday for a release next Tuesday. The release date is being changed to an as yet unconfirmed date. As soon as we have further information, we will send you another email with details. We apologize for the delay.

Thanks,
Donald Fagen Official Store"

No real surprise as sites like amazon.com have listed the release date as July 10 for sometime now. It'll be interestin to see if that r-e-a-l-l-y is the date or if we'll have to wait a few more days/weeks.

Genesis live 2007 = success

Genesis has started its Turn It On Again tour. The first gig took place in Helsinki on June 11.
It seems there was not much media coverage though.
The only review found so far is from the swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter:
"Turn It On Again - The Tour is a fantastic show and an inventory of a solid carreer and with a selection of songs that spans over three decades."

However, one of Siggy's friends was there and shares his excitement like this:
"A fantastic concert. Impressive, and a big portion of nostalgia. Phil Collins sang better than ever."
The oldest song they played was I Know What I Like from Selling England By The Pound.
Swedish fans will be able to watch the Düsseldorf show on June 27 by satellite on certain cinemas:
The Folkets Hus organisation is giving Genesis fans the chance to see their heroes perform on stage broadcasting the band's sold out Düsseldorf gig live across Sweden..."Front row seats for cutting edge HD live 5:1 Dolby Digital Sound broadcast."

Zevon x 2

With Jordan Zevon's appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman June 7 we get the chance to see, listen and compare his version of Searching For A Heart with the one the composer of the song; Jordan's father Warren Zevon performed on The Late Show back in the early 90's:

Sunday and sun

We've had a full week of warm, sunny weather, and even the Radio Dupree staff went AWOL staying outdoors as much as possible. God knows the autumn and winter will be here soon enough...
As promised on our homepage we'll publish a weekly Top 10 of listener's favourites. It's one way to keep the blog alive as we soak up the sun by the sea far, far away from the turntables, records and Internet in general.

This chart shows that our Album of the Month; The Beatles Sgt. Pepper's is liked. And why shouldn't it? The only "new" artist is Dolores O'Riordan, who's gotten fine reviews for her new solo album.

1. Yes - Astral Traveller - Time And A Word
= Donald Fagen - Countermoon - Kamakiriad
3. The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (reprise) - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
= The Beatles - Fixing A Hole - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
5. David Bowie - Lady Stardust - The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars
6. Genesis - Lilywhite Lilith - The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway
7. The Who - Love Ain't For Keeping - Who's Next
8. The Beatles - Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (Reprise) - Anthology 2
9. Dolores O'Riordan - Human Spirit - Are You Listening?
10. CCS - Whole Lotta Love - A's & B's And Rarities

P.S. That Yes cover is the US version. Click it to read more about the album and see the original naughty UK cover!

Ready to buy yet another version of Aja?

Steely Dan's 1977 album Aja is 30 this year. Very timely a brand new vinyl remaster will see the light of day August 1.
The remaster by Kevin Gray - a mastering engineer that has ben around since the early 70's - has been personally approved by Donald Fagen and Walter Becker as well as Aja recording engineer Elliot Scheiner. It will be released on 180 gram vinyl by Cisco Records, a company specializing in audiophile releses on vinyl and CD.
How much will it cost?
$32.98.

Wekend music: Was (Not Was)

An underrated Detroit group from the 80's that's a firm favourite with Radio Dupree; Was (Not Was) as featured in a set of songs from their 2005 gig in London. Just uploaded to YouTube and worth a watch and a view.

Have a great weekend!
