Zappa a' la flamenco

The Radio Dupree staff went to the local rock club on September 29 to see pianist Mats Öberg (ex Zappa's Universe) play Zappa together with two young guitarists, Marko and Mikko Savela.
We got to hear a fine selection of Zappa tunes such as Who Needs The Peace Corps, I Promise Not To Come In Your Mouth and our personal favorite composition Dupree's Paradise. This was a new experience...Zappa in flamenco style with a little touch of Toots Thielemans (Mats also plays the harmonica). Pretty amazing! This trio adds a new dimension to these songs. It was a strange thing to hear Who Needs The Peace Corps in this arrangement with the beautiful harmonies which are kind of hidden behind the comedy style on the original album (We're Only In It For The Money).
The Savela brothers have played local gigs but also the Zappanale festival in Germany in 2005.
Hey guys, how abot a world tour?

Boz Burrell dead

Former King Crimson bass player and vocalist Boz Burrell passed away on September 21st.
The information comes from www.dgmlive.com, a site about King Crimson, Robert Fripp etc.
Burrell was born in 1946 and died at his Spanish home in Puerto Banus, Marbella.
Burrell played with King Crimson in the early 1970's and appears on the albums Islands and Earthbound. Later he joined Bad Company and he also appears on albums with Alvin Lee, Ted Nugent and others.

Sweden Dan

Rebecka Törnqvist and Sara Isaksson
Two Swedish singers get set to release a CD of Steely Dan covers; Fire In The Hole - Sing Steely Dan.
Rebecka Törnqvist and Sara Isaksson both released their debut solo albums in the early/mid-90's and have worked together as part of the group Gloria.
Sara has two albums to her name as well as collaborations with Swedish pianist Anders Widmark, while Rebecka has released seven albums.

Her "official homepage" is for the two year old album Travel Like In Songs, but at least you can hear a few short music samples there.
For a "newer" Rebecka check out four songs from her latest Melting Into Orange over on her myspace page.

Sara Isaksson's keeping a low profile on the Internet. No links to share...
About the album Fire In The Hole - Sing Steely Dan the record company information quotes the two ladies saying:

We've recorded 12 songs by the American duo, mainly using just piano and vocals. As a contrast to the originals we wanted it as simple as possible to focus on the songs fantastic stories and melodies.

Part of the project is also Lars Halapi, another member of Gloria but probably best known internationally as the collaborator/producer for Sophie Zelmani.
CD cover of Sings Steely Dan
Tracks on the upcoming CD:
1. Rose darling
2. Barrytown
3. Gaucho
4. Green earrings
5. Your gold teeth II
6. Brooklyn (owes the charmer under me)
7. Don't take me alive
8. Josie
9. Do it again
10. Fire in the hole
11. Pearl of the quarter
12. Midnite cruiser

Radio Dupree think that Rebecka and Sara could have a great album here. We'll know October 16 when Fire In The Hole - Sing Steely Dan is released. In the meantime we'll add some of their solo stuff to the playlist.

Weekend music

For this weekend we've got some old school 70's prog for you listeners. French group Magma, Pierre Moerlen's Gong along with some "new" King Crimson and Zappa...

The video clip shows some essential Magma...the repetitive but still haunting music, the occult mysticism expressed in Kobaïa - the group's own language!, the feeling of a family or a religious sect rather than a musical group with the undoubted leader Christian Vander on drums.

We've also piled up a bunch of Bob Dylan songs, just to warm you up til next month. Expect the new Dylan CD for "album of the month" for October.

Fagen won't play Aalener Jazzfest

According to a post to dandom.com Bluebook by a fan who phoned the Aalener Jazzfest, Donald Fagen won't be playing there this November. As reported a couple of days ago, Donald's name is mentioned among a handful of artists supposed to be part of the Aalener Jazzfest in southern Germany.

This is of course a blow to the hopes that Donald just might take his Morph The Cat tour to Europe. So what about the other rumoured date: Milan, Italy? Who knows?

Keepin' hope alive is a short notice on donaldfagen.com:

9/8/06
This in from Joelly Dubner:

this morning i had a rather odd voicemail from DF --

something about how when he was out on the road he wanted to be home, but now that he's home, he's not sure..."every minute I stay in this room I get weaker... and every minute Charlie squats in the bush he gets stronger"... what's that supposed to mean?

Joelly

For the show-starved fan this might be dechipered as a possible urge to get back out on the road again.

Back to waiting... and perhaps seeing things where there's nothing to see.

Changes on Radio Dupree?

For all you David Bowie fans out there (?): We have dug out a selection of Bowie tracks that we haven't played too much before.

But how much Bowie do you want to hear on Radio Dupree? All you can get...? Or is there actually any place for the thin white duke at all?
Any comments are welcome. Please mail us at radiodupree@yahoo.se

Donald Fagen to tour Europe this year?

Donald Fagen.Could he be taking his solo tour to Europe this fall/winter?

Dirk Werner reports the following in the latest Dandom Digest:

I've just bought the new issue of the German jazz magazine "jazzthing" and there is an small advertisement that says that Donald Fagen is coming to the "Aalener Jazzfest" here in Germany.

The "Aalener Jazzfest" will take place on 11/02 - 11/05.

The Aalener Jazzfest homepage isn't updated with what artists will play this years festival, but the magazine mentioned; Jazz Thing, has Donald listed in it's live section online. Just scroll on down to the Aalener Jazzfest note.

* * * Update September 6: It says the tickets will go on sale mid-September, so in another week or two we should know if Donald will be there or not. * * *

A post over at the alt.music-steely-dan newsgroup adds that Donald Fagen will play Milan, Italy later this year according to the link below. No exact date, but then again my Italian is useless. If anyone feel like adding a rough translation, please do!

http://www.maialino.it/cinema/smeraldo_stagione.htm:

"Di Donald Fagen, mente degli Steely Dan, formazione jazz rock degli anni Settanta, è impossibile non ricordare l’eclettismo e le grandi capacità musicali: un nome su tutti, The Nightfly, titolo del suo album d’esordio del 1982, disco amatissimo e da molti considerato
un vero e proprio capolavoro. Ma è nel 2006 che arriva l’ultima fatica solista di Donald, Morph the cat, che sarà in tour anche al Teatro Ventaglio Smeraldo."
