All of Rolling Stone now on Google Play Newstand for Android and iOS

The quality and importance of Rolling Stone magazine these days can be discussed, but we think that few argue the fact that early on it was a publication that was part of,  presented and recorded the youth culture of the late 1960's and early 1970's.

Now all the issues of Rolling Stone from 1967 up until today is availiable to read using the Google Play Newsstand app. Just a few of the stories/articles are free, but it's all there thanks to a deal between the magazine and Google.

Google Play Newsstand for Android here and iOS here.

Record producer Kim Fowley dead at 75

Kim Fowley worked with a large number or artists: The Runaways, Warren Zevon, Alice Cooper, The Mothers of Invention, to name a few.
Here's a real oddity: Fowley's appearance with Rodney Bingerheimer on a track on street singer Wild Man Fischer's debut album from 1968, where they provide an introduction to, and make prophecies about the future of Wild Man Fischer:

Album of the Month January 2015: What Up, Dog?

Usually we've picked albums that celebrate some sort of anniversary, but for January 2015 we've picked a RD favourite. One of those albums we come back to again and again.

David Weiss (a.k.a. David Was) and Don Fagenson (a.k.a. Don Was) were childhood friends in Detroit and back in 1979 they formed the group Was (Not Was).
What followed was a number of albums sounding quite differently from each other and we're focusing What Up Dog? released in 1988 this month.
It was the commercial and perhaps creative peak for the group that disbanded in 1992 only to return in 2004 and continue - albeit sparingly - to this day.

What you get on the 15 tracks of this album is beautiful melodies, funny and sharp social commentary and ... happy music! That what was caught us and keep this album a solid RD favourite 27 years later. And beyond!
Too slick? Nonsense!

Elvis Costello pops up as a co-witer of one song (Shadow & Jimmy) while Frank Sinatra adds vocals on Wedding Vows In Vegas.

Happy Birthday Donald Fagen!

"Excerpt" from a photo by Danny Clinch on steelydan.com
Donald Fagen is 67 today, and hopefully he celebrates that in a way that he himself likes. Even if it is not celebrating at all...

King Crimson - most popular on Radio Dupree 2014

We have compiled a Radio Dupree chart for the entire year 2014, based on the monthly charts compiled by listeners voting on the songs they hear on Radio Dupree. This is how we did it: A #1 position got 10 points, #2 got 9 points etc.
So here it is:

1. King Crimson
39 points
7 listings

2. David Bowie
29 points
9 listings

3. Steely Dan
26 points
5 listings

4. The Beatles
23 points
5 listings

5. Jethro Tull
23 points
4 listings

6. Pink Floyd
23 points
4 listings

7. Kate Bush
23 points
3 listings

8. Walter Becker
21 points
4 listings

9. Yes
21 points
3 listings

10. Jimi Hendrix
20 points
4 listings

Chart analysis: Somewhat surprising to find King Crimson on the top of the 2014 chart. We have always been playing KC but we expected to find them as #9 och 10 or so. We have considered them to be a bit left field, even for our listeners, but this indicates that we should continue to play KC.
The rest of the artists/groups in the chart are ones that we expected to be there somewhere, with a couple of exceptions: First it's Kate Bush. She has appeared on our monthly charts three times. Well deserved! We have played more music by Kate, to celebrate her tour, and we assume that Kate's successful tour increased the interest for her music.
Then there is Yes. We often use to stick a couple of Yes songs into our playlists, but have seldom seen them getting any "thumbs up", until 2014.
2013 Frank Zappa was #2. Now he didn't really make it on the top ten chart, which is sad. Should we play less music by Frank? Come on, don't give me that!
Anyway, keep pushing them "thumbs up" buttons when you hear something you like on Radio Dupree.

Bye-bye to 2014 with a Kate Bush Christmas Card

And as we wave goodbye to 2014 already a week gone we thought we'd share a surprise Christmas card that arrived just before Santa did.
The card is from Ormond Yard Press/Snap Galleries in London. Snap had a exhibition of photos of Kate Bush to coincide with her run of sold out shows this past autumn. And while we attended one of the shows AND visited Snap Galleries we never got around to delivering our promised report on the show.

Snap Galleries will publish a book of Kate Bush photos taken by Gered Mankowitz (cover in the lower right corner of the card) and also have books with photos of Rolling Stones and Jimi Hendrix arriving January/February.

If you're interested in rock/pop photography and in London a visit to Snap Galleries is highly recommended!
And thanks to Snap for the Christmas card. A slightly modified version of the photo from the cover of her 1978 album Lionheart.

Elton John's Legendary Covers Album legendary once more...

It is reincarnated once more; the set of cover songs recorded by a your Elton John before his big break. Usually titled The Legendary Covers Album 1969-70 it is re-released time and time again on small record labels. We got our CD well over a decade ago.

This particular release is available on CD, vinyl and coloured vinyl form.

So what songs are on the album?

1.  United We Stand
2.  Spirit In The Sky
3.  Travelin’ Band
4.  Up Around The Bend
5.  Come And Get It
6.  Love Of The Common People
7.  It’s All In The Game
8.  Yellow River
9.  My Baby Loves Lovin’
10. Lady D’Arbanville
All part of quickly recorded sound-alike covers for popular low budget album series of which Top Of The Pops was the most successful. Read more on this particular part of pop history here. And here!

Vinyl perversities: Yet more proof that humans are disgusting

You might take a quick look at the pictures and think to yourself "Hey, nice bowls ... but what are they doing on the Radio Dupree blog?"

And you are correct to ask yourself that question. But if you're here reading this and listening to our channel chances are that you also like music on vinyl.

Here comes the scary part.

If you look closer you'll find that they're made of recycled vinyl records. Warmed up, melted and transformed.
Yes, we know. It's sad to see them violated like this. We sure felt that way when we got these as a gift a year or so ago. It has taken us that long to finally expose this sick way of treating unwanted records. For profit, at that. They sell them to clueless victims who end up filling them with fruit, assorted keys or whatever.

Steely Dan tour in 2015? Yes!

Walter Becker and Donald Fagen. Photo: steelydan.com
Steely Dan has been playing live 2000, 2003, 2006 - 09, 2011, 20013 - 14, so it might not come as that big of a surprise that the band plans to tour in 2015 as well. All according to a fan who talked to one person from the 2014 tour crew.

Things may change - as they tend to do - but we're hoping for a 2015 tour that will include some dates outside of the USA and Canada. The band did visit Australia and New Zeeland as part of the 2011 dates, but the rest of the world has been left to do without Steely Dan shows for the past six years...
