A home recording by Jimi Hendrix is expected to fetch between £50,000 and £100,000 at an online auction.
According to BBC the recording includes 14 tracks, including songs from the 1968 album Electric Ladyland. It was when Hendrix lived in London that he gave two tapes away to his neighbour. As the story goes, the neighbour kept getting disturbed by people, and said 'a favour for a favour'... and Jimi gave him two tapes.
One of the tapes will now be sold by the Fame Bureau.

Elton & Billy sounds fine...
With a long time friend named Billy Joel he's right now doing another tour of the USA and getting good reviews.
Having skipped the last couple of solo tours from Elton I might just be persuaded to pay the ticket price for a John/Joel show.

Brian Eno on Zappa
The opposite of what they are doing, says Eno, would be the work of Frank Zappa. "Zappa was very technical and impressed by things that were musically challenging - weird time signatures, strange keys, awkward chord sequences. Zappa was important to me as an example of everything I didn't want to do. I'm very grateful to him, actually."

Swede soul music... Billy Paul documentary
Billy Paul - Am I Black Enough For You
Were our fellow Swede Göran Hugo Olsson portraits 70's soul singer Billy Paul. He was part of the Philadelphia International Records/Kenny Gamble & Leon Huff success of the 1970's.
Billy is still touring and while the documentary has been shown at film festivals and just premiered here in Sweden it looks like you could get a chance to see it even if you happen to live someplace else on this planet. First Europe, then the USA and the rest of the world.

Storm on cover art
For the person interested in album cover art there's now a book titled Taken by Storm - album art by Storm Thorgerson. Click the pic or this link to get to the BBC page to read more and watch a short clip with Storm.
Oh! And by the way. If you want to read up on the man who invented record album art (Alex Steinweiss back in 1938) you can go here, here or here. Lots of record covers to enjoy!
Seeks money for new Woodstock festival
The original Woodstock festival marked the zenit, and the end of the sixties flower power era. Lang made an attempt to revive the festival for a 30th anniversary 1999, but it ended in chaos when fans were making bonfires that threatened to make the stage catch fire.
Reggae apparently a no-no for Amy
Amy Winehouse has reportedly had her new songs rejected by her record label. ... "She seems to have ditched her trademark vintage soul sound and is now heavily influenced by reggae. Her bosses don't think it's a wise move to change her style so sharply and have told her that."
... demo tracks for her upcoming third album have also been criticised for being "very dark" compared to her previous hits . . . In the past, she's written frequently about broken hearts and boyfriends, but this time round she's delving into harrowing terrain."
Bosses are determined to ensure Amy's upcoming album matches the success of her 2006 LP 'Back to Black'.
Isn't it nice to have bosses that want you to do the same thing over and over again?
"Reggae influences"? "Dark lyrics"? Sounds familiar...
Get her into a studio with Larry K and the guys including that Sadowsky-playing fella and see where it goes. Galang!

Steely Dan 2009: Skippin' Scandinavia?
While we wait for some official news either way we'd like to mention that the last time Steely Dan toured this part of the world the show at the Stockholm Jazz Festival 2007 proved to draw that festival's largest audience.Date: Mon, March 23, 2009, 15:31:09 ET
Steely Dan Scandinavia - cancelled?
Posted by: TJ, DK
Today reading Denmarks largest music magazine I came across a fullpage ad stating that Steely Dan would be visting the Danish city Randers on june 17 playing in the concerthall Vaerket.
Unfortunately the same day a friend who works in a booking agency told me that Steely Dan had actually cancelled the date although it was confirmed.
Sad and also a bit strange. Did they decide to skip Scandinavia?
We're still hoping that some concert promotor/arranger is trying to get a deal done to get the band back here. "Here" being Scandinavia or any combination of the Nordic countries. We're not picky! :)
Thumbs crossed...

Walter saves the evening!
So this evening I am enjoying a beer and the great playlist pictured above. All of Circus Money + the extras that have been released so far.
Just happened to be on the Vista side of the computer rather than the Ubuntu/Linux one, but as long as the Media Player is playing the music I can live with the fact that it somehow can't find and show the album cover. :)
While I'm enjoying the music I'm trying to remember the weird Steely Dan dream I woke from Monday morning. If we don't get any new tour dates Thursday I might share that Nemo-esque dream with you all in a separate post tomorrow.

No Steely Dan at Soboba this year...
The change means that it won't be practical to book giant headliners such as KISS and Steely Dan, but Tarri Rubio, the casino's entertainment coordinator, said there are plenty of quality acts available, especially since many performers charge reduced fees in light of the dour economy. The music from now on will "lean heavily on Latin music and country acts".
becker vs fagen dot com
In contrast walterbecker.com was pretty quick in adding a link to the Steely Dan tour page:
This is also true for Walter's MySpace page:
By the way; did that empty player with no songs and no plays just appear or has it been there before?
And is there an official Donald Fagen MySpace page? A quick look gave us a few obvious fake ones but none that felt like the real deal.

Madeleine Peyroux "Bare Bones" released
Here's the EPK (Electronic Press Kit):
Steely Dan live in 2009: Criswell Jr. predicts!
So after the European tour becoming official last week nine shows have been confirmed.
Looking even further back I can see that this will be the fourth tour of Europe since Steely Dan started playing live again in 1993.
1996: Nine shows in Europe in September after playing the USA and before going to Japan.
2000: 15 shows in Europe in late August and September after touring Japan and the USA.
2007: 16 shows in Europe in July after touring the USA and before goingto Japan, Australia and New Zealand.
With nine dates official so far there is clearly room for a few more in Europe this time around. Comparing the schedule to 2000 and 2007 I can see that a couple of countries are "missing". Germany and the Scandinavian/Nordic countries.
There are room for a couple of shows early July. Or maybe late June before the announced Amsterdam gig. Or maybe even late July after the week in Italy.
Of course nothing says Steely Dan must play any of the Scandinavian countries this time around, but I would be surprised if we didn't get at least one or two shows in Germany.
I would also be surprised if the 2009 tour is Europe-only. Surely some shows in the USA/Canada and Japan must be there somewhere in the mix?
And rememeber: "Future events such as these will affect you in the future."

The general advice in the ticket selling world still is what it has always been; stay cool and check back as better tickets usually pop up later. Fine if you live close enough to the venue.
But what if you have to make plans to travel to the show?
Gamble on better tickets becoming available and order the airplane tickets, book the hotel room and risking ending up at the far back with the worst tickets possible? So much for the "concert experience".
If we're supposed to buy tickets up to six months in advance of a show we should also get the courtesy of having access to all the best tickets from the start. Not see them miracously appear weeks and months after the show went on sale.
It's enough to kill the initial buzz of being able to see your favourite artist live. Enough to make you stay at home and spare yourself the unnecessary hassle.
We wish that things were constructed to first and foremost serve the ticket buying audience, instead of making it as easy and profitable as possible for the Ticketmasters and Live Nations of this planet.
Se you at the shows? Maybe...

Number one this month: A bonus track from the 2006 CD version of an album originally released 1970 and considered Atomic Rooster's best.
Also from the 70's ELO's big hit Telephone Line and the Gil Scott-Heron/Brian Jackson collaboration Angel Dust.
Zappa is no stranger to the Top 20, but his cover of Whipping Post is not the most ovious track to make it to the top. One track from our Album of the Month; Lumpy Gravy, just made the chart. My guess is that Zappa will do better with this month's Sheik Yerbouti. We'll know early in March.

Happy birthday, Sheik Yerbouti!
It is now 30 years since the Sheik Yerbouti album was released. The exact date was March 3, 1979. I realize that I also can celebrate three decades as a Zappa fan, since Sheik Yerbouti was the album that really got med hooked...to Zappa AND to music. It kind of changed my life a bit. I picked the album at the library and listened through headphones and the music totally blew my mind...the rich, flamboyant sound, the extremely close miked lead vocals, the energy!
Sheik Yerbouti is one of Frank's most important albums. It marked a sort of a come back, after a couple of tough years in the business. It even resulted in a hit record. It is also a landmark of music technology and innovativity.
