Breaking news: I am going to hell!

No doubt about it. At least according to the friendly people over at whowilldietoday.blogspot.com.

I was sitting at the computer when it signalled a new comment had been added to this blog. Happily I checked it out. But it isn't any comment at all. It's just another line of information or - if you will - spam, asking me to visit a page. A page where I get a counter counting the number of people who have died since I clicked my way to that page. And I am told to go see if I've been a good human being living the right kind of life. Good to know if I should happen to join the league of dead.

So I click my way to this page where I answer eight questions like "Have you ever told a lie?", "Have you gone to church regularly?" and "Have you ever looked at someone and had lustful thoughts?". Based on the answers I will find out if I'm going to heaven or hell when I die.

No surprise there...

The devil with a smile!

See you in hell!
Neb - doomed from the start.

Why?

In order to celebrate 2 years online we decided to give away a set of three CDs to a person picked at random on May 1 from all the entries recieved.

Guess what. With a couple of hundred hits to our blog and homepage this past week, not one single person has had the interest/guts/sense of adventure to mail us their address...

No big problem! We can always keep the records after May 1 if noone get their mail in the door by April 30 at the latest.

Check back to see what happened with these three CDs!

Carolyn for president! - "Some swingin' canary"

Carolyn Leonhart
Carolyn Leonhart

Not only did Carolyn Leonhart manage to be the first to add a comment on this blog, but she's also made one hell of an album!

Carolyn is busy!"The new one called New 8th Day is a big step forward for Carolyn. More direct and focused than its predecessor "Steal The Moon".

And while I wrote "I guess I'll feature a couple of tracks on RadioDupree's playlist, even though the stuff from Steal The Moon was met with ... indifferent to negative reactions by the listeners. Might work better this time around. We'll see.", I want to make it clear I liked "Steal The Moon" and even more so "New 8th Day".

It's full of life and has a sharper edge to it. Less laidback. Next on my list is to check out her work with Lyn Leon.

Weekend music

A little bit of culture to keep your weekend on the positive side? Well, then this post is for you!

Since my use of words like "Scandinavian sin" and "sex" has added a few extra hits to the total of this blog, I am happy to announce the arrival of The Sex Album!!!

Yep, you read it just right. An album recorded using the sounds of couples making love as music.

OK.

Using sounds people make when making love. OK. Understood. Fine.

Does one perhaps smell commercial considerations? Of Course! Even if they try to deny it.

Go here:

http://www.thesexalbum.com/home.html

to read and listen...

I won't try to steer your mind in one direction or the other, but I found the music quite ... unmoving.

(But then again I've got "The Second Arrangement" on repeat...) :)

Yahoo watching Y-O-U!!! ...

Known for years I guess a notice here might come in handy for people like me who have missed this info:

Yahoo are using so called "beacons" to track what we do on and outside of Yahoo:

Not nice of Yahoo.

Charge my credit card...

Carolyn Leonhart
Carolyn Leonhart

I've done it! For the ... let's see, third time. Done what? Bought music over the Internet, of course.

The first time was just one song to test the possibilities. Worked just fine! The second time was when the compilation CD Enjoy Every Sandwich - The Songs Of Warren Zevon was released. I ordered the CD but couldn't wait for it to arrive when I found out that it could also be ordered in lossless format over at disclogic.com.

And now I've gone and bought an album again. After reading about Carolyn Leonhart's new CD and clicking the download option I did once again find myself over at disclogic.com. And just entered my credit card info and a little over one hour later I had her new record New 8th Day on my harddrive.

I've converted and burned the ten tracks. All I am missing is the cover art and info about who's written what. I did find the band listed on the homepage.

Donald Fagen praises CarolynThe very first Carolyn Leonhart CD I bought was her debut Steal The Moon, after hearing and seeing her on the Steely Dan Two Against Nature tour back in 2000. She was one of the backup singers.
I started tracking down the various recordings the band members had been part of and ended up exposing my ears to a bunch of new music.

So it was not much of a problem getting Carolyn's latest when it was released this month.
I guess I'll feature a couple of tracks on RadioDupree's playlist, even though the stuff from Steal The Moon was met with ... indifferent to negative reactions by the listeners. Might work better this time around. We'll see.

Enjoy what's left of the weekend!

12 hours of Zappa this Sunday

It's not RadioDupree but WUSB serving up the annual Zappathon.
Hosted by Nigey Lennon it commences at noon EST. (That's 6 in the evening Central European Time). Or maybe 1 pm EST/7 PM CET. WUSB and Nigey have different info on their pages. I'd tune in at noon/6 just to be on the safe side!

She promises lots of FZ music plus guests like Greg Russo (who wrote the reference work Cosmic Debris), Candy Zappa and Rabbi Joe (of Armadillo World Headquarters).

Just thought you might like to know...

Win our CDs! "It was two years ago today...

Win these three CDs!
You can become the owner of three great CDs!

... RadioDupree started broadcasting".

It was April 16 2003. Celebrating this milestone we're offering one winner a chance to get three of our fvourite albums - still neatly shrink-wrapped - delivered to his or her door.
How do you enter this giveaway? Simple! Just mail us your name and address no later than April 30 and on May 1 we'll draw a a lucky winner who'll be able to enjoy the following CDs:

FRANK ZAPPA - For Collectors Only

A collection of early Zappa! Sounding very much the pop surfer in these tracks recorded under aliases like Baby Ray & The Ferns, The Rotations and Bob Guy. Get these grooves from the early 60s!

MARIAN McPARTLAND/STEELY DAN - Piano Jazz
The official CD of the NPR show "Piano Jazz" recorded in 2002 where Steely Dan talks and play with the shows host Marian McPartland. They do a couple of classic Dan-tunes like Josie and Black Friday, but also play Mood Indigo and other jazz numbers.

VARIOUS ARTISTS - Enjoy Every Sandwich - The Songs Of Warren Zevon
A labour of love from friends and fans of Warren Zevon. A lineup offering their versions of some of the artists songs. How about these names:

Don Henley, Adam Sandler, Steve Earle, Reckless Kelly, Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, Bruce Springsteen, Wallflowers, Jordan Zevon, Billy Thornton, Pete Yorn, Bob Dylan, David Lindley, Ry Cooder, Jill Sobule, Pixies, Jorge Calderon and Van Dyke Parks.

Siggy goes west, part V

An Evening with Wild Man Fischer

Here in the US every store, company, radio station, sports team etc seem to have a t-shirt with their logo.
And since the t-shirts are cheap and in some cases I got'em for free I'll be loaded with them when I get back home.

It has been a wonderful trip and I have noticed a few things that are different here compared to my home land. Some useful information here for you first timers going overseas:
If you wanna go pee you should look for the restroom, they don't call them toilets, see.
I went to a couple of record stores mainly to look for CD's. I found some neat LP's, however. One was An Eve w/Wild Man Fischer in great condition for $35. It's rare and I could have replaced my old copy and sold it for maybe $50.

But I have learnt a lesson. Avoid bringing fragile LP's when you are going to spend 24 hrs on three different flights.

"T-shiiiirts..."
(Frank Zappa, Passaic, New Jersey, Halloween Night 1972. Remember? You were there, right?)

PS. This is my last report from this trip in the US.

Gene does a "Frank"

With the song Black Tongue featuring a borrowed part from Frank Zappa, how suitable to use the photo of Gene "on the job" just like Frank did way back when:

Siggy goes west, part IV

Siggy looking for sweet deals ... and oatmeal.
Hey! Time to go shopping!

It's 1 PM and I'm awfully hungry. The environment here offers a lot of food, but it is hard to find dishes a' la Scandnavia.
Yesterday I was on a sight seeing trip to a place outside Portland, Oregon, called Timberland Lodge. A place for downhill skiing.

Wasn't I surprised to see that the lodge is actually the hotel where Jack Nicholson went berserk in the movie The Shining!
This giant lodge was built during the New Deal thing in the 1930's and is a remarkable place to see. I've never ever seen such a big fire place. No Nicholson shouting "Here's Johnny!" though.

Now off to the grocery store. Wonder if they have a
porridge department?

Ta taa,
Sigurd

Siggy goes west, part III

37-cent stamp

The Pacific is really cold here in Oregon. How strange there are still these small villages by the sea where people go for holiday. But I guess there is a strong attraction in the ocean even if you can not swim there. It was beautiful anyhow.

So where are all those right wing americans I heard so much about? I haven't met any of them. But lotsa people who say "Well, WE didn't vote for that asshole!" Who are they talking about?

Tallyhoo...

New from Fripp & Eno

CD cover

Brand new for April is the latest ambient adventure courtesy of Robert Fripp and Brian Eno.
Called The Equatorial Stars it apparently started out a troubled recording. Here's what's written by Eno himself over at http://www.enoshop.co.uk/:

"It didn't start well. Somehow my shoe nudged the little red button on the little black box with the little green lights. That button told the little box to tell the digital recorder that we would be recording in a manner far too tedious to explain when in fact we intended to record quite differently, in a manner also far too tedious to explain."

Listen to a couple of short samples and order the CD ... or just read the complete text from Eno.

P.S.
Clicking the title of this post will bring you to a site that includes Mr Fripp's online diary.

More Cowbells!

It's an "old" thing, but I'm sure even those who've heard of this and seen the video can get a couple of laughs out of the more cowbell sketch as performed on the television show Saturday Night Live back in April of 2000.

With guest Christopher Walken playing the record producer telling Blue Oyster Cult he needs "more cowbells" on the song "Don't Fear The Reaper".

Read an article on the sketch and what the original BOC thinks of it here.

Then skip on over to The Cowbell Project where you can get a list ... a l-o-n-g list of songs featuring cowbell. Sadly the links to remixed tracks that supposedly get better with cowbell (Billy Idol's "Flesh For Fantasy", Sammy Hagar's "Three Lock Box" and Paul McCartney's "Uncle Albert") don't work. Neither does the link to the sketch.

But don't worry! You can view the complete cowbell sketch here.

Enjoy!

Siggy goes west, act II

USA-flagga

Everybody is just so polite and helpful here. They even shout "Thank you!" to the bus driver when they go off the bus.
That would not happen in Sweden...and certainly not in France I guess.

Have you ever heard of a radio station called KBOO in Portland, Oregon?
It's a community radio station. You can listen to them on the internet.

They play some music that you hardly ever get to hear. They choose topics like most other stations would not. This is a station for people who dare to think and discuss, I guess.

Am I too "pro-KBOO" here? Well, I just met some of the nicest people there today.
I got to talk to Don Manning, be-bop programmer extraordinaire. He started talking about Stan Getz so I did some name dropping to impress and mentioned the fine recording Dear Old Stockholm that was taped in my home country Sweden in the 1950's. I wouldn't say Don was cracking a smile but I kinda saw that I had hit the right spot.

Tweedle-dum...See ya' folks,

US flag

"You have to push harder" said the policewoman. OK. I pushed my finger a little harder on the red glass display so they would get a decent fingerprint.

"Please take a step back". I looked into the camera and tried to look like a good guy. Passport control is a little different nowadays. But everyone here is really nice and helpful.

I left Sweden on Monday morning. Arrived to Chicago 9 hrs later. Next time I'll order a business class ticket. But then I'll have to stand the business talk guys. Maybe if I bring ear plugs.

Lives with friends. Beatrice woke me up this morning by licking my face. Beatrice is the family dog.

Album of the month

You got the clues here.
Two pics; one of a little gnome, one of a laughing mouth.

Did you guess it?

"The Laughing Gnome" as performed by one David Bowie. An early recordning that was a hit once his career took off. His early recordings were compiled and released as "Another Face" in 1981. More on the album over at RadioDupree.

Just another case of "Swedish sin"? Part 2

Lutricia McNeal CD-single
Politics?

OK. First of all; forget about the "sin" part in the headline. It was just a cheap trick to get your attention. Then forget about the "Swedish" part. Lutricia McNeal is from Oklahoma City, USA.

Although she did get her break as an artist in Sweden in the early 90's and had her biggest hit in Europe in 1997 with her cover of Barbi Benton's "Ain't That Just The Way" from 1977.

Lutricia has continued to release records, concentrating on Germany/Scandinavia/Australia.
My personal opinion is that she's a woman with better voice than material. And her dance-oriented music will never make it to RadioDupree, so if you feel like sampling her stuff you'll have to click the headline or here: www.lutricia.com

Anyways...

The reason for this post is that I found the pic on her new single just funny enough to rise above the mass of Bush/bush-jokes we've all seen since George W took center stage.

Over at RadioDupree the homepage has been updated with a brand new monthly chart. As usual full of Zappa. A few other tidbits in there as well, including some info on a new Jethro Tull DVD.
Expect the page to be updated before the month is over, as April 16 is RadioDupree's two year jubilee. I've been thinking about giving away a CD or two, but we'll see what happens.

Oh! Finally:
Sigurd has packed his bags and will leave for USA Monday 4. He'll be back in 10 days or so, but I hope he'll have the time to find some obscure records while he's over there in Oregon. Happy trails, Siggy!

Weekend Music

Yahoo! Music is perhaps not full of RadioDupree-type artists, but looking will give you the chance to view three Donald Fagen videos; Pretzel Logic, Snowbound and Century's End.

Yes, you have to register, but I think it's worth the hassle. Go there and do a search for your favourite artists and then decide.
